You're experiences in Brisbane are different from mine - my favorite past time when I visit there is crawling along motorways at less than 20km/h.

As for living in a regional town. I could do it - although I wouldnt want to live in a town of under 500 people. Really depends what the demographic in town is like - are they similar age/ect & how welcoming they are to outsiders.

I think 8 hours drive to a major city would be my limit. Anything more than that and I would struggle.

For city dwellers that do a tree change to avoid a huge shock is best to look at >40,000 people. That size will have the services and shops youre used to.eg Tamworth or Hervey Bay type or larger. But... In saying that the bigger "hub " towns often have a centre link and more lower socio economic type features

There's a significant difference in country towns by location - some parts of Australia still have thriving communities, whereas others have been suffering the long decline.

I spent a majority of my childhood living a country town of <350 people, you couldn't pay me to do it again. There's a reason why some communities have issues with alcoholism, teen pregnancies and in recent times drug issue - complete and utter boredom.
