According to the govt my new suburb has 506 people - however this being Perth it's only 25km to the CBD.
It's our 10 acre tree change and due to it's viticulture significance the govt has various protection schemes and 10 acres will be the smallest block allowed in my suburb and many of the surrounding suburbs/area.
So I get the best of both worlds really. There are veggies to buy on the road side and a Bunnings and supermarket within 10kms in a non viticulture area. 23km to the kids school which is doable in about 25-30mins on the highway.

A couple of years after graduating and with a few years experience, I moved to Orange and then Cumnock (population less than 250). Had absolutely the time of my life for the approximately three years I was there. I reflect so fondly on living there and especially the friends.

It is a completely different lifestyle than living in a city.

After that I moved Singapore and then KL. Guess I like contrasts.

I've lived in small towns ranging from 130 to 5000 people - and loved it. It's not for everyone but it was perfect for us at the time. Now we still like the small town feel but prefer to have the options being close to the city gives.

We've got the best of both worlds where we are now.

We had 3 years in a remote town of 130 - one of the best periods of my life. It was on the beach which helped too :)

Recently relocated from Newcastle to a town of c. 5000 people. Shopping options are limited, as are medical options. We'll probably gravitate back to civilisation as we age to increase options, but at this stage, the extra $70k pa in income for the next 8 years was too good to turn down.

I researched this considering retirement a couple of years back.
As I get older I get fed up with the heat during summer, can always dress for cold, can't with heat.

If on the East coast I'd prob consider acreage somewhere outside of Davenport Tassy.

With my kids over here in WA I'd prob end up in a regional coastal area outside of Albany, ~5hrs drive too/from Perth, or 1hr flight.

    Yep. Easy.
Ive lived all through WA. Having spent time in Essperance, and Broome, and a whole lot of places in between. Although I am from Perth, I have lived there only 2years in the last 16.

Country towns can be hard to get used to. Depending on how 'clicky' they are and how many 'outsiders' they recieve.

I spent a good amount of time in a town of about 20,000. It is a great size. You could walk/ride to almost anywhere in town. Very little traffic. Enough people, but not too many, every service you want/need (multiple schools/hospitals etc). Also a lot of recreation. Football, hockey, softball, basketball, cricket, gyms etc etc etc.
Everyone timed travel in minutes. Its 3mins to the shops, its 7mins to the x and 13mins to y.

The beach was walking distance. We could go for a dive before work, spend +/- 3hrs on the boat and still make it to the office for 9:00am.

I would take country living over city living any day of the week (and twice on sundays).

It's a posh way of saying drunken hippies used to live there but the developers have driven them all away. ;)

My mrs spent a year in longreach (outback qld). Cowboy town.
    Flying doctor type arrangement.
She said good experience, but would not do it again.

I wouldn't mind moving back to Adelaide for retirement, where a lot of people said is a big country town .... There are plenty of quality suburbs to live at bargain prices.
