I learned through joining a meetup.com group about success and mutual support for success that the basis of the group was actually not much more than buying luxury cars and enjoying them.
That is their right to borrow large amounts of money or use their savings on luxury cars and have fun. Was fun to hear the stories.
But these guys didn't even own a house.
By their reports many people who buy Lambos etc. do everything they can to obtain one. Considering it a goal. Even when they have no real wealth. Getting the car becomes their financial goal at the exclusion of other things. A pretty bad long term strategy.
Interesting to meet those people but not really the group I was looking for. I would not consider a luxury car without at least $3M net worth personally. And I am nowhere near that.

We, as a couple, are ... and I happily drive a $5,000 (on a good day) Toyota Corolla ... that mentality is why we have our net worth

I'm yet to meet anyone, rich or poor, in any country that regrets buying a corolla.
Or for that matter a Mazda 3.

I do. My wife's granfather passed away about 15 years ago, at the time we bought his Corolla. 1998 model and the bloody thing just won't die! I want a new car but looks like this thing will still be going strong for another decade!

Yeah but that's how it generally is in any big vs small city worldwide.
Humbleness is AWOL to a large degree in the bigger centres - worldwide.
But.. It's also cultural in the place you are in.
For instance, in Dubai, someone with a high job or social status is absolutely expected to drive a luxury car - in fact, if they don't, people will look down on you (part pity, part curiosity as to why you don't drive anything better, and part comic - they will have a laugh at your expense)... Sure, one might say ' well I don't care what others think etc '...can't do that as easily there...those ' other's ' may well be your colleagues, business associates etc..it's all about impression and perception.. And as one forum member rightly said recently, Perception is reality. You want to be perceived in the most favourable light in those places and the ' reality' will likely be hoe you are perceived. A bit different here...in places like Brisbane, the CEO will jostle for a seat in the bus...no kidding.

Coz in Dubai....the native Emiratis are don't need to be successful....they simply get money because they were born there...

I go to Europe a lot...I see how these this mob behaves there...the last time..they got on my nerves and told them off....the Germans ladies in the store gave me the widest grins.

Their minder...looked up and then looked down quickly......hilarious....outside of their country not everyone put up with their *******

The Chinese here are same......who really cares......don't get me wrong a junk of car is no go because of safety reasons..

Agrees to the first and last paragraphs.. But note that it's not just the locals.. In fact in Dubai, the locals are the minority!!!
Its the culture of the place more than any one nationality.

So why compare to a culture which is so status conscious and fake?

I work with people who make $350-500k and complain about not earning enough.....

You could draw parallels with your Sydney 300-500z colleagues. Probably more so with Sydney to Dubai than Sydney to Adelaide.

I think we are all a little bit guilty of the "big hat no cattle" in life...when I was a teenager I found a very expensive logo shirt in an opshop, bought it, unpicked the logo label and sewed it onto a Target shirt (cut the inside label off the collar as well, of course!)

    Nothing wrong with a Corolla!

When I'm not walking, cycling or catching public transport, I get around in a 1994 Daihatsu Charade. I don't need to impress anyone with my car. I figure if anyone is going to judge me for my car then I don't want to know them. :p

I don't really know my net worth and I'm not particularly interested to know. I have plenty of income to pay my loans. That's what I care about.
