Questions : 1. Is the pattern on the carpet still intact in the darker areas (hard to see from the photo) ? 2. does the carpet feel different (stiffer) in those areas compared to surrounding carpet ?

Really? I'm pretty sure that every place I rented has required that the carpets are to be professionally cleaned upon moving out. I think it's a reasonable expectation, too.

Yeah, it's a pretty gross thought if it hasn't been cleaned before you move in.

We've moved out now - but from memory:

    2. No

What? Small hand held thing? Could that steamer have actually been a device to steam out wrinkles in clothes and curtains?

I'm sure he's referring to your posts where you are trying to get around paying the full amount.

If you're a decent person you would pay the full amount.
You made the mistake of letting your sister try out her toy on someone else's carpet instead of telling her "no" the first time.
Now you have the chance to do the right thing, so go do it.
Don't try and give reasons as to why you shouldn't have to pay the full amount for it.
Carpet was new, it was wrecked when you returned it. And you know it was wasn't typical wear and tear damage.

Bit hard to fix if you've moved out ?
Those baby steamers are dangerous weapons in the hands of untrained professionals :D:oops:
