well 6 months!, thats not going to change, unless you steam clean it again , and it may remove the stains,

why not get a profesional to quote it or to see if will come out?

I would say you are liable for all of it - given it was malicious damage.

But that's assuming you are an upstanding person and want to do the right thing.

Obviously if you are not an upstanding person and want to use gray areas to weasel out of the damage you / your sister knowingly caused then you could argue otherwise.

If I knowingly stuffed someone else's property (especially if it was brand new when I touched it), then I would pay for what it costs to restore back to the condition prior to me screwing it up - but that's just me.

Yup Ken. This is my personal view as well; previous post was my PM view on what might actually happen based on previous cases.

Hi guys only just saw this and it is fixable in about 15 mins flat.
Quite simply, carpet has been over wet in "some areas", stains have popped back up typical, but no big deal, just needs re cleaning on "those areas" only, preferably encap and this will solve your problem. The carpet doesnt need to be replaced and as I said easily fixable. You see this with most $10-20 room carpet cleaners anyway. Try not to steam clean next time better options as Jim64 said. Malicious damage ?? Yeah right, not likely !

Spill the beans mate - what's the solution?

I've had it professionally cleaned, he said not fixable. The local carpet company also said not fixable. If you've got a solution that won't cost me $850, I'd be stoked.

Did you asl them why its not fixable ? From the photo it doesnt appear that the pile is damaged but I can see that it was steam cleaned, triangular marks are a dead giveaway ?? Did the local company try to re clean it ? All carpet cleaners have different knowlege so try and find a master technician who is using "Encapsulation". Encap for short fixes a mammoth amount of problems because of the way it works, no resoiling, no furniture stains, dry in less than an hour. Master tech means they will understand the fibre and will usually be using top end products. I am assuming that the first clean was with warmish water and heaps of detergent ??

I used to run a part time carpet cleaning company. Too much water was put down, well that type of carpet is the well known for this happening. You can get that out it will take some time. Did your sister use a Bissell shampooer?

This situation doesn't sound malicious or intentional, but it does sound quite careless and reckless. If I were the landlord I would be upset and be asking the tenant to pay the replacement cost. Why should the Landlord pay for the tenant's mistake?

I think you missed these parts of his post.

They weren't trying to clean it themselves to save money.
Their sister was testing out a new steamer she had bought - instead of testing it on her own carpet, she tested it out on theirs. Obviously the person renting the apartment didn't care given it wasn't "their" carpet. Had this been their own place and given the carpet was newly laid down, I'm sure the response to their sister would have been very different.

Like @neK wrote and most people are agreeing, if it was us we would just pay the replacement and I would go to my sister for the money either all or work out some other agreement.

End of the day the carpet was newish and damage was caused, if it was your carpet what would you do?

I am sure you would ask your sister to fix you up, so why should the rule be different when it is someone else's property?

By any means do what you want as it is your life however I respect people more for owning up to a mistake and fixing it than trying to weasel their way around it.... Again I doubt we will ever meet.
