True. Hence; it is also not financially the better move to buy brand new.
A 2 year old, 40,000km version of the exact same car is still basically brand new, sti has warranty, but you will aave probably 1/3 the cost of new.

One of my stepkids got my previous Corolla - a 2003 auto model - again was only worth around $2-3,000 ... she had someone run up the back of her. It was written off, so she got the insurance payout when they de-registered it - she took it to a qualified mechanic who checked it over and had it re-registered. So got the money and the car.

The boot had to be tied shut, but otherwise worked perfectly for another two years when she took it to the scrap yard and got paid more for it than on the second hand market.

I'm in the sell it camp. For no other reason than its a Hyundai with well over 200k and parts will be expensive.

This will matter more and more as time goes on.

Save your pennies and buy a 10 year old rolla.....then drive THAT into the ground. :)

That might prove to be quite difficult :D
You got better odds of the Sydney market booming in the next 6 months than killing a corolla. Haha

I loved my old Hyundai. I took perhaps too much joy in sailing past Porsche owners (a mechanic had owned it and tuned it very well).

I actually wish I'd kept it when the repairs got expensive. Hindsight's annoying!

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I think most people confirmed what I was thinking anyway.

I just don't have any reason at the moment to spend even $4-5K on upgrading. If anything I am actually inspired to get Frank Sonata back from the mechanic and give her the good once over inside and out!!

I have the same dilemma right now. I took our car for its annual registration check and the mechanic called me with some disappointing news.
The car has more life in it, so I'll get it fixed. I look at changing cars a bit like changing tenants to chase better rent. There is a cost and some hassles and it's a bit of a gamble because you don't know what problems the new tenants/car might bring with them.

The least expensive car depending on your ego levels.

I'm thinking of disobeying that concept after driving down the Monaro highway to Cooma and getting an armored car. The amount of roadkill! Roo's, wombats and even deer. Not just one but groups of three or so and consistent all the way. I've already totaled one car because it had a love affair with Mr Kanga out at Tarago (both were misty eyed due to the early morning fog.)

I have some friends that both have Corollas around 2008 vintage. Both well over 200,000 km. One is relenting though and will probably replace their car soon.

I drive a 1994 Daihatsu Charade. When it came up for a major repair I asked my mechanic to inspect and advise. He is good and I know he won't bs me. He cane up with a list of repairs and advised me of likely repairs in the next few years and costs. The car is in good condition for age, is running well and is not going to cost a lot to keep in the road. I chose the repair option.

That was a couple of years ago and the mechanic was spot on with predictions.

    Saw the mechanic this afternoon,

    - clutch needs replacing as it is is buggered and out of place, this led to:
    - need to replace fly wheel
    also:
    - need to replace transmission
    - drive shaft is broken
    - muffler has a hole would not pass rego

insurance and rego ($1000) due end of this month also,

He could get it back on the road for around $3-4K

    I think its time!
