Not that long ago, I settled a dispute with a tenant about high water usage and leaking toilet flush. They never informed the agent as they haven't "noticed" it. Long story short, ended up with a water usage bill of over $500. Watercorp said it's not a hidden leak so won't accept the leak allowance application. In the end, I agreed to cover 20% + plumber costs and the tenant pay for the rest.

I was thinking if I should just install smart meters in all the IPs so I get near real-time usage and be on the look out for leaks. It wasn't a huge amount this time around but I was reading about stories of bills for several thousand dollars and water company did nothing.

The official smart meters are still on trial in some remote locations so it has to be something after the main water meter. Any thoughts?

Worse, you could outlay for installation and end up like all those people with solar panel monitoring app's

All excited at first and check them regularly

But as the weeks and months pass so does their enthusiasm

Then they get a massive bill, log in to check and find the system/inverter died months ago

Any system is only as good as those monitoring it :p
