The thorough cleaning practices of a Cairns renter have uncovered a haul of diamonds that police believe may have been hidden for more than a decade.

Senior Constable Russel Parker said it was believed that at some point from about the year 2000 somebody had "left this little stash secreted inside the unit".

"It was only found because [the property] was undergoing such a thorough clean," he said.

Senior Constable Parker said police were trying to reunite the diamonds with their rightful owner, but were remaining tight-lipped about the exact details of the find.

He said fewer than six diamonds were found, but would not say how big they were, or how much they were worth.

Great Scott! Diamonds discovered in Bungalow! - Far North

The cleaners may well end up with diamonds ,if no one is found to own the diamonds..

Contrary to reason,i thought that after 3 months then the cleaners would have a claim on the diamonds ..

Wouldn't the current owner of the property have first right of claim, if the actual owners of the diamonds can't be found?

Almost like saying industrial diamonds are real diamond. (try telling that to the +1) - I've got millions of the things just lying around (in barrels and sticks)

Why not the property owner ? Hard to describe a cut gemstone as a mineral right if thats the logic

Next my cleaner say - Found some old jewellery and cash lying around. Mine !
Tenant says - Found this old AC unit and pavers lying on the dirt and sold them on gumtree.
