Just how many Liberals have announced they will not be contesting the next election? I've seriously lost count ... Pyne Ciobo (rumoured I think) Banks Sudmalis Bishop (J) O'Dwyer Anyone else?
Pyne starts out idealist for Tory cause , trickle down, no rights for workers etc. Ends up in charge of manufacture and sale of killer weapons to Saudis .
Who would have thought one clown with delusions of grandeur and some help from a few more , would have caused so many unintended consequences.
This article says that it shows that there is little confidence from within the coalition that they will win. https://www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...ty-s-grim-election-hopes-20190301-p5116r.html It also points out that the ranks of the senior moderates have been decimated.
The moderate Liberal MP is extinct – Howard subjugated them years ago | Greg Jericho Just because you're slightly left of lunar right wing conservative doesn't make you a moderate.
Moderate would, I think, be the traditional liberal - i.e. Socially liberal, economically conservative. Russell Broadbent for example. Can't think of any others in the coalition except maybe Craig Laundy (not for long) . Since Scomo, the running tally is: Banks Bishop Scudmalis Pyne Ciobo O'Dwyer Probably Laundy Did I miss anyone?
And Julie Bishop on the front page of the Perth weekend paper , accused Chris Pyne of a bit of treachery when Turnbull got dumped . But it was always about the best man for the job.
Pyne is realist enough to know that the troglodytes of the Liberal Party would never allow a woman to be elected, and also that after electing Scomo their prospects of winning an election were laughable. Got his ministers pension though... His ability to always come out on top is remarkable, but not admirable.
Lot of big names and high profiles heading out the door. Much of the dominant, moderate stabilising force is leaving
I don't feel hopeful despite this. What should happen now is some young, diverse talent is selected to replace the departed. But I fear the bitter old white male selectors will replace the departed with bitter old white men. Sigh.
If only ... While it's meant mostly just to raise a smile, it also carries the more serious point that she appears to be giving the right appearance and saying the right things, far more than our politicians- and certainly far better than some of the overseas pollies.
Great minds think alike - I only popped on here to post this meme. Yes - need more compassion, understanding, acceptance and powerful dignity ... less chest beating and incitement
just wondering....... do MP's get the same $$ pension upon retirement whilst in power as opposed to being a retiring MP of the coalition ? could it be the case of, best to get out whilst on top?
There are all sorts of add-ons: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...figure-pensions-for-life-20160304-gna6c1.html
Going into opposition can mean some real big pay cuts. How would many go here if they saw their pay packets drop by 30 -50 %. For many politicians it might look like a good opportunity to leave politics and go back and work for business.
