    Yes, even for 20 years ago that was a bit extreme

    Apparently prior to the 1970s or so the man usually owned the property and usually died leaving it to his kids with wife having a life interest until her death, or remarriage.

    Really old thinking just a generation ago.

    When my mum wanted to rent a colour TV (early 1970) she was only able to do so when my dad (who couldn't see the point of colour) agreed to countersign as guarantor. She was quite able to pay from her own means.
