I just received a card from an agency congratulating us by name on our new purchase....

We looked at one place with this agency and bought with someone else about 3 months later. We didnt tell them that we had bought or where we had bought.

Getting a card from them was a little creepy....

    Is this normal?

its a falling market, they get desperate.

But hey, I also get cards from mortgage brokers etc. of course I have some real friends so I just throw the cards in the bin:p where they belong

Normal. Likely that they agents themselves don't even know about it directly, but know that their admin/marketing/Filipino PA/ do the same for everyone on their list.

    B) it is a PPOR
    and c) our new address?

They have your name for the property you looked at with them.
    1. they do name searches on RP Data for everyone on their contact list
    2. search has your contact details on it and it shows if property rented;
    3. search has your contact details on it.

My practice sends hand written material all the time. It's not a solicitors hand writing ..................

I would not be too worried, they prob watch the market closely if quiet, or they may know the other agent, they are thinking of future business I would say.

Right, that makes sense. Along with @MTR
    's comment about falling markets.

    Case closed!

    Thank you!

I also don't like getting unsolicited mail. I had a property that was taking a bit to rent (it is Perth, so no surprises there) and got a huge glossy marketing brochure from a rival PM saying that they'd do a better job.

It put me offside - one, because my PM is fine and it wasn't on the market for a stupid length of time, and two because I'd never go with them if they waste so much money sending expensive brochures to cold leads. Super expensive management fees too - prob all goes on marketing.

I bought an IP in 2013 and mentioned to the agent if anything similar came up he should call and let me know - I'm in the market for more!

He has never called with anything he's listed or listing, but he does mail a Christmas card and scratchie every year without fail.

Doesn't meet the definition of creepy, but every year when I get it I think it's a bit silly.

This stuff may not work on everyone, but it works enough to make a positive ROI.

If he sends you a Christmas card with him as santa and your face photoshopped on his knee, that's creepy.

An annual card to confirm postal address is normal. Small marketing tool but keeps him front of mind.

You think that's creepy? We got a 'Happy Anniversary' card from the REA on our third wedding anniversary.

We never told him we were getting married, or when. And never had contact with him again once we settled our PPOR (and would prefer to never havr cintact with him again).

Yeah, there's a line. It's fine if you have a great relationship with them and become actual friends during the buying process, but otherwise it's just weird.

I find most do the electronic version now, or worse, just in the sig of regular communications.

One of the keen young gals who was at a few opens we attended, either herself or from her office , delivered a card, hand written, you never know, it may earn her some extra $$$ just because she is keen.

That ones weird, must have found out by social media or something, but yeah, that is too personal.
