Sideways or downwards movement. Foundations moving under that section?

Speaking from personal experience, the pic you put up doesn't look bad at all, I've seen worse that have had no problem. Many buildings have these types of cracks, caused by different reasons. Building inspector needs to look at it obviously (as you've said) and if they think it needs further inspection they should let you know.

I don't like it, the contract fall through actually, the agent did not disclose the reason, so maybe that's the case

Highly doubt it but you never know, get a professional to look at it and give you their opinion and go from there. Alternatively, don't buy it!

That wouldnt worry me personally. It doesn't look serious, and is minor settlement.

Cracks like that often appear at stress points like doors, windows etc, where there is a lintel. That looks like a meter box/gas alcove

It is due to foundation settlement. If the foundation keep on settling, then the crack becomes wider. In this case you may need to fix it- it would cost not less than 10k. Negotiate upfront if you are going ahead..

This is why I usually prefer weatherboard

Perfectly normal. Minor cracking. Get it repointed.

Building looks old judging by 70s brick. So if this is the worst if it.

I hate weather board with a passion

Took me few mins to find out where the crack was ... :p

Doubt it's a worry, but great to confirm with building inspector..

This is minor cracking, likely caused by differential foundation settlement but also a lack of articulation/movement joint detailing in the wall. Pretty common issue in buildings pre-1980s.

Without wanting to turn this into a religious debate, why is that the case? Is it the painting?

    Accoustic properties
    Constant painting and maintenance

For me it simply a cheaper construction method that is used to save money.

Although some concrete type boards look much better but again maintenance.

For me it's like the story of the 3 pigies.

Weatherboards usually come standard on character homes.

actually, we find some great Weatherboards houses within our budget and preferred location, but it was a no go, just cultural reason, from where we came, every thing is brick
