THere are some weird people out there. They probably have flybuys cards yet won't download an app that doesn't transfer any data unless you upload it.

The app does NOT track your location. It tracks contacts with other people who have also installed the app - that is all.

If two people have both installed the app and come within bluetooth range of each other, the app will log that information in a database on your phone (and ONLY on your phone - it doesn't uploaded it automatically) and on the phone of the person you came into contact with. It stores bluetooth addresses of people you have come into contact with, not their location.

If you then later test positive to the virus, you will be asked (not forced) to uploaded your contact data to the servers (accessible only to state government contact tracing teams - not the federal government), so that they can use that contact information to send alerts out to people in your contact history informing them that they have come into contact with someone who had the virus.

Either way, contact data is automatically deleted after 21 days.

There are people who have already decompiled the app and inspected the source code - the app does exactly what it says on the tin, no more and at least on Android, it uses standard operating system calls which are well known and widely trusted. There is no magic here - it's all standard stuff.

The biggest source of fear is ignorance.

I've installed the app - I'm satisfied with how it works and how the data is being used.

I agree with all your comments @Simon Hampel but I think some people haven’t read what it does, what it can do and what it cannot do.

What amazes me is that people who slather their details all over FB are worried about the privacy with this app. o_O

I just downloaded that app, though I can’t imagine being within 1.5m of someone I don’t know for 15 minutes.

The fact that Barnaby opposes it means it is almost certainly ok!

Spending 15 minutes within 1.5m of Barnaby might be more dangerous than mere coronavirus ;-)

With the current restrictions, i think the app won't be very useful and most people will probably forget they have it on their phone as the probability of meeting one of the 6713 current cases is infinitesimal and will vary greatly from State to State . But the more we relax the restrictions and people are more out and about, I think the app will be much more useful in tracking and actually controlling the spread.

    Very "aussie modern" mentality

Scream and rant about privacy and rights yet happy to contradict themselves completely by putting their name, family.members and "checking in" when they go for a holiday or to the shops

Exactly, with the amount of information people freely divulge inadvertently or directly by posting on various platforms, via internet searches, numerous everyday apps, location services and various reward cards a detailed profile could easily be constructed if one was so inclined.

Great response so quickly - we will have over 2.5m registered users by end of today.

The smartest thing the government did was make it voluntary. Amazingly clever esp. from the government.

The way I see it, if I'm working, I will be in contact with more people so I'm comfortable having the app (sort-of like a geiger counter - limited exposure may be OK but longer exposure sets it off).

Downloaded and tried to register. Invalid phone number.

Don't know if I didn't read something correctly but wifi had to be disabled.

Looking at all the negative feedback on the play store people are having the same problem and giving up.

remember to leave the 0 off the beginning of your telephone number. So mobile number is 413666666

my wifi didn’t need to be turned off. But I’m an apple fanboi so might be different.

Yes I know that. There's an issue on some phones that requires wifi to be disabled to register.

Designed by the IT department of the census.

I had a problem initially as well with an unavailable message then invalid number despite dropping the 0. Eventually it worked.
