Top 10 countries as of 5th Feb 2021 (based on average daily new cases):

#1: US new cases continue to drop, but average daily deaths still remains well above 3,000 per day - indicating to me that their dropping case figures are not accurate. Given the overall average deaths per case in the US is 1.7%, their current figures of nearly 2.6% are uncharacteristicly high.

#7: Indonesia jumps up to 7th place from 12th last week with strong growth in case numbers. Deaths have dropped sharply in the past week - which is more likely from reporting anomalies given that cases have been rising recently

Although deaths are a lagging indicator. It may just be a matter of a few weeks before deaths start dropping.

Cases may have been higher than normal in January due to Christmas social activities, and are now dropping back to average. Winter is still at its peak. Positive effects from vaccinations will probably take a while to show.
