Gees with numbers like those you'd wonder how these countries could even possibly reopen or be wondering about and crossing borders . lt's like this whole lockdown and suppression concept is just a hopelessly impossible idea.

Don't be duped - according to reporting it appears the USA has levelled off and getting a handle on the virus ... but the levelling off coincides with the data being redirected from the CDC to direct government control in Washington :( ... call me a cynic but those on the ground say it's getting completely out of control

Perhaps they have belatedly adopted the UK system. Died with covid symptoms - no test - not a covid death. UK appears to have scrubbed at least 10,000 deaths this way.

Exactly, it is an unsustainable approach, necessary to get the numbers down initially but only wealthier countries can sustain it for an extended period of time. Economic and human impact of lockdown are too damaging. That has been the judgement in Europe, almost all borders are open but there are some spikes now and that is shaky, restrictions are "recommended" now rather than the law, so I´m off to the beach now before it closes (definitely will in the afternoon) and to a restaurant after. Who knows when those things will become illegal again.

Living and seeing how Spain has handled this thing - what advice would you give Melburnians?

Much of the EU is saddled in debt so financial pressure to reopen will be great.

It's also pretty impractical to actually close borders across Europe - I think they've simply taken the pragmatic approach.

Here’s a thought. Asia doesn’t really feature in the lists in any big way (apart from Singapore). The wearing of masks, the giving people space (No hugging and kissing), the consideration of community above the individual, the past SARS virus could be all protecting factors. Back in early March my volleyball teammates all pushed to stop the volleyball competition because they experienced SARS outbreak in HK. They didn’t want the virus to spread. They would rather miss the game than cause an outbreak.

Sweden still in top 5 - looks like herd immunity not working?

It appears that the 'early adopters' (ie the cities/countries affected earliest in the pandemic) had the highest incidences of poor outcomes, whether that was totally due to the novel nature of the virus, inadequate precautions or just not taking it seriously, I don't pretend to know.

Has the virility or efficacy of the virus decreased as with the numbers of infections climbing there is no longer the horrific >5% death rate or are the stats simply wrong at both ends?
