Just when you thought you were safe......

"Polar researchers in Antarctica have contracted coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated and living far away from civilisation.

At least 16 of the 25 staff based at Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Polar Station have caught the virus, the Le Soir newspaper reported, proving there is no escape from the pandemic."

I made some changes to my VirusChat website to include the ability to restrict the list of countries being compared to those on the list of "high income economies" as defined by the World Bank, while also excluding countries with less than 500K population.

This will allow us to compare ourselves to other "wealthy" countries who all should have the ability to provide a more sophisticated health response to the pandemic.

There are 47 countries on the list.

    Some stats:

COVID-19 Report - Total cases as of 1 Jan 2022

    upload_2022-1-3_16-45-24.png
    • Australia is #30 out of 47 with 463K total cases

COVID-19 Report - Average daily new cases as of 1 Jan 2022

    upload_2022-1-3_16-46-39.png
    • As shown, Australia is #8 out of 47 countries

COVID-19 Report - Population infection rate as of 1 Jan 2022

    upload_2022-1-3_16-47-55.png
    • Australia is #41 out of 47 with 1.83% of our population infected with COVID
    • Slovakia @ 25% is pretty staggering
    • The UK @ almost 20% - one in 5 people have had COVID
    • It should be noted that this does not take into account people who have been re-infected, who would probably be counted twice

COVID-19 Report - Total deaths as of 1 Jan 2022

    upload_2022-1-3_16-50-6.png
    • Australia is #34 out of 47, with total deaths of 2.26K

COVID-19 Report - Average daily deaths as of 1 Jan 2022

    upload_2022-1-3_16-50-57.png
    • Australia is #25 out of 47 with 9.6 deaths per day on average

COVID-19 Report - Deaths per million population as of 1 Jan 2022

    upload_2022-1-3_16-52-4.png
    • Australia is #44 out of 47 with 89.0 deaths per million population
    • Only Taiwan, Hong Kong and New Zealand have done better than Australia
    • Hungary's death rate of 4,000 per million = 4 per 1,000 = 1 per 250 ... 1 person out of every 250 has died! That's like having 6 kids from my daughter's primary school dying (on average).

Anyone heard how @Casteller is going with his recovery? He's been awfully quiet.

I'm ok now thanks, negative on a lateral flow test at home 3 days ago and isolation has finished.

Hit harder than I expected considering vaccinated last June. Symptoms for weeks but for about 4 days after xmas it knocked me around, couldn't breath properly and was trying to sleep face down like I saw on TV. At one point collapsed on the bathroom floor, wasn't good, my son also positive got scared and sent him back to his mum since she was also positive by then. Anyway all ok now, easily run out of breath though so not quite back to normal.

Depressing that everything has gone backwards about 7 months here, the night curfew is back, outdoor masks (indoor never went away), half capacity gym and restaurants, etc...

@Casteller - glad to hear that you're on the mend & hope that your family all fare as well as yourself.

We can only wait & see what our fearless leaders come up with to taper the spread with cases hitting 35k in the latest reporting period for NSW.

Fearless is not a word I would use to describe Dom.

I can’t post what words are far better descriptors - the mods will ban me (again).

Didn't know what other thread to post this in ... quite fascinating ... peer reviewed research strongly points to the omicron variant having jumped from humans to mice very early in 2020, mutated to its current form over 18 months and jumped back

Whilst Straya is copping flak for not letting someone play with their balls, over the ditch they're just not letting their own back into the country. There are simply no "red" flights from Oz to NZ or access to their 10 day quarantine (MIQ).

New travel blow for Kiwis stuck in Australia

Not only that, they've delayed the men's cricket by a couple of weeks (for MIQ) & slotted in the women's league.

Thus no bias on playing with their balls in NZ.

Global (high income economies with > 500K population) status as of yesterday:

    • Australia #41 out of 47 - same as last week - but we have jumped from 1.83% of the population infected to 3.39% infected in the space of a week, so at this rate, we'll start rapidly climbing the charts!

No surprises there, the world has known this for the last 12 to 18 months (well I did).

What surprises me is how so many people including our leaders are ignoring it. Major health cost heading our way, me thinks

So covid stricken daughter in Fiji tells us that she needs a negative RAT or PCR test in order to get home.

Except that she says there are no RAT or PCR tests left in the country.

We got some at Jerra Woolies this morning. But there's little chance of her getting any in time.

She won't be the only one in the same boat. There's a lot of it around. At least she has flexible flights.

Need to be flexible when you're in the same boat. Hope she doesn't encounter any big waves on the way back.
