New record number of mortalities (artificially inflated for additional days which were underreported.

    • Latest figures from Johns Hopkins University show 165 million people have caught covid-19 during the pandemic, with 2.29 million deaths.
    • Greece has joined several other European countries, including France, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, in deciding not to give people over 65 the AstraZeneca vaccine.
    • Lebanon is to start an easing of its countrywide lockdown that has been in place since 14 January. Intensive care capacity is at 90% across the country.
    • A major study from economists has tracked an “unprecedented” rise in poverty, caused by the pandemic, in many developing countries across three continents.
The UK government is exploring the idea of documentation that would allow travellers to prove they have been vaccinated against coronavirus.

Caused by lockdowns, not the pandemic itself.

Fascinating - but not particularly good news video - as studies are undertaken as why a sudden resurgence of Covid cases in Manaus, Brazil, after it had such a high (practically herd immunity level) wave towards the end of 2020.

Appears some new mutations are not being recognised by the immune system, such as the South African and Brazil varieties. Even more reason to be cautious, even after immunisation

A relative in Mexico contracted covid-19 while pregnant. She recovered - but the baby was born with hypoxia - a shortage of oxygen. Apart from seeing a picture of the baby with lots of tubes, I have no idea about the condition or prognosis.

Apparently hypoxia can present itself in a covid-19 patient with no other symptoms evident, and may not even be aware that they have a problem.

Germany concerned over reluctance to have jab – as it happened

    · The United Nations led calls for a coordinated global effort to vaccinate against Covid-19, warning that gaping inequities in initial efforts put the whole planet at risk. Foreign ministers met virtually for a first-ever UN Security Council session on vaccinations called by current chair Britain, which said the world had a “moral duty” to act together against the pandemic that has killed more than 2.4 million people, AFP reports.

    · The pandemic has added $24tn to the global debt mountain over the last year a new study has shown, leaving it at a record $281tn and the worldwide debt-to-GDP ratio at over 355%.

    · Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Wednesday the country would enter a gradual normalisation period, province by province, in March. Weekend lockdowns, which have been in place since December, would be lifted gradually on a provincial basis subject to low infection numbers, he said.

    · Spain will administer AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine to people aged 45 to 55 in the next phase of its national inoculation plan, as new figures showed the third wave of infection receding further.

    · Cyprus plans to reopen its airports with the help of a colour-coded health risk assessment from 1 March, applicable to travellers from its main tourism markets and the EU, authorities said on Wednesday.

    · One in five diabetes patients admitted to hospital with Covid-19 die within 28 days, research suggests. Results from an ongoing study by the University of Nantes in France also showed that one in eight diabetes patients admitted to hospital with coronavirus were still in hospital 28 days after they first arrived.

    · Central European countries asked the European council president, Charles Michel, to help ease tighter controls imposed by Germany on the Czech and Austrian borders to free up the flow of goods and industrial components..

UK office of national statistics also states that those with a moderate/severe learning disability die at a rate of 3:1 compared to those who don't ... sad and curious

This quirk (blocking AstraZeneca vaccine for over 55s) has meant I am eligible for a vaccine much earlier than many older people, two parallel tiers have developed. I'll just wait anyway & see what happens.

This shows causes for death for January.

For Covid-19 deaths, it shows the January 2021 figures. For other causes, 2019 annual figures divided by 12 - so not quite accurate for a single month, but it gives an idea.

Can´t see that happening in Europe. International travel yes, and maybe some jobs, but not restaurants, gyms, pools, museums, etc. (all open here in Barcelona now in daytime hours already)

As the world hits 111.7M cases and just under 2.5M recorded mortalities, the US has hit 500,000 deaths.
