Denmark culled minks when it was discovered they were infected by Covid.

"There was shock last week when Denmark decided to cull all its mink - up to 17 million animals - because of the spread of coronavirus. That national cull has turned into a political outcry, now that the prime minister has admitted the plan was rushed and had no legal basis.

Danish authorities worry that a mutated form of coronavirus found in mink could potentially hamper the effectiveness of a future vaccine."

What a shame. That could only ever happen with livestock. Imagine trying to take people's pets away.

I asked an ER doctor this morning how busy it is these days with Covid being a factor? He said something along the lines of don't believe what you read in the news. It's been crazy busy. But it was not busy in ER both days.

I wish I'd asked him what he meant. He did say something about a husband or daughter having it (not his - generally), and I now think he might have meant the staffing levels were suffering due to staff having to isolate when their partners or children catch it.

I'm guessing covid patients wouldn't be allowed to be cared for at a private hospital but would have to go to the public? But I would also guess that most people woould be avoiding any hospital unless they really had to in case there were infected people there?

Yes. I've lost count how many times various Governments have been told that would happen if all restrictions were removed and not only to rely on vaccinations. Even with vaccinations high, it was suggested public health measures may still be necessary.

Ah well, I think it was the Spartans during one of their sieges of Athens saw all the smoke from the funeral pyres and said "Leave youse to it, bros. Next time maybe" and went home.

I've read the March 2020 pre-print before but it has been updated.

Pandemics Depress the Economy, Public Health Interventions Do Not: Evidence from the 1918 Flu by Sergio Correia, Stephan Luck, Emil Verner :: SSRN

"Do non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) aimed at reducing mortality during a pandemic necessarily have adverse economic effects? We use variation in the timing and intensity of NPIs across U.S. cities during the 1918 Flu Pandemic to examine their economic impact. While the pandemic itself was associated with economic disruptions in the short run, we find these disruptions were similar across cities with strict and lenient NPIs. In the medium run, we find suggestive evidence that, if anything, NPIs are associated with better economic outcomes. Our findings indicate that NPIs can reduce disease transmission without necessarily further depressing economic activity."

NSW - too early to call the peak yet, but hospitalisations have definitely slowed

Victoria - hospitalisations seem like they may have already peaked - but data has always been more volatile than NSW, so I'd want to see more of a trend to confirm.

Queensland - definitely hasn't peaked yet.

    South Australia - still rising.

    Cause my partner had it.

Then I started having a runny nose and thought - I guess there's no reason I should have a cold in the middle of summer.
