Christmas Island is not no extra risk - there are no suitable medical facilities there and it is a very long way from Australia with limited resources.

    They were in NSW.

    Greater than zero.

From health.gov.au there were 36 overseas acquired cases in the last 7 days. 11 cases have been hospitalised in the past 7 days - unsure of how many hospitalisations were from returned travellers, but given how few community transmissions we've had, I'd suggest most of them.

From Christmas Island? Do you know how long that would take and how expensive medi-vacs are? Not entirely suitable for someone with health issues who may be deterioriating rapidly too.

You still have to transport people back to Australia once their quarantine period has finished - and that won't be a commercial flight.

It would be cheaper to rent a house for every returning traveller to stay in at the tax-payer's expense than to send people to Christmas Island to quarantine. I don't think that's an exaggeration either - take a look at how much we're spending on detention centres.

Good luck finding any rental in Perth! :)

Dan Andrews has flagged reducing numbers coming back to Oz. Maybe this will lead to people only being permitted to return once vaccinated?

    Risk reduction strategy.

Problem with that is it won't really stop the spread. Apparently the vaccination may stop you becoming seriously ill but it won't stop you passing on the virus.

I think it's time to stop international arrivals into Victoria. Clearly they've got no idea how to manage anything.

Who on earth would have any confidence to open business operations there. Long term damage being done.

One of our major suppliers already toyed with moving their head office out, will be a done deal now.

If you are close enough to family to be sitting around a table, blowing out candles is not going to be more risky than just chatting over the dinner table for an hour.

But hubby's birthday last week, I stuck candles into an apple and he blew them out, separate to the cake.

Still we all would have likely contracted Covid if anyone there that night had it.

I’m honestly shocked QLD hasn’t shut its borders to VIC. This is a first for them.

Set up a bunch of dongas in Darwin with good airflow and a field hospital. Quarantine in city centres seems like a bad idea.

Very concerning because if it's being carried it can still mutate. Unclear yet whether certain vaccines might prevent transmission or not.

Aside from being the only place in the world that squashed a second wave you mean? It's a bit early to tell, there seem to be legitimate arguments about how the UK strain is spreading faster, thus making contact tracing incredibly difficult because people get infected before you can identify them, but we probably need more information about this.

Terrible idea. We can not put the indigenous community at risk. They are already a high risk group.

Agree totally. Not actually in Darwin, but in a remote-ish area with decent transport. How many US troops are we quarantining at the moment?

Canberra is pretty isolated, has an airport that can handle international flights, and can be walled off :eek::eek:

And nothing important ever happens in Canberra too - I think we're onto something here!

Move our federal parliament to Sydney like it was supposed to be in the first place - obviously Melbourne can't handle being in charge :p :D

Yep lucky the virus knows that it can only spread after midnight and we could get Nick most of Novak's game in.

The lockdown is bad enough for city people. It's worse for country people, especially those on the land. There is a 5km limit on how far you can travel - and I don't know if there are exemptions for people who live much further from the shops than that.

Hard to understand the rationale behind the whole state being in lockdown, especially regional and country VIC.

I've just delved into the fine print. People are allowed to travel to the closest store if it's more than 5km away.

My sister who is affected wasn't aware of this.

There's too many roads leading out of Melb. An announcement on a Friday for a Ring of Steel would have almost certainly meant mass migration of potentially covid carrying city dwellers out to the regionals (... and buying up their supply of toilet paper :D). Was much easier to declare whole state locked, but as above, the travel limits don't really apply outside of Metro Melb.

If there are no shops within 5k, you are allowed to travel to the closest shops to your home regardless of the distance.
