Australia chose health first, and our economy is doing okay (not great but okay) win/win ... other countries chose economy first, and now their health systems are failing and so are their economies lose/lose.

Can't have a healthy economy without a healthy populous

Good to see Melb people taking the latest outbreak seriously - huge queues at the testing station I just drove past!! Hoping they don't have to stand too long in the sun!! (was meant to be rain today, but typical melb it's like clear and sunny right now)

Really happy that Victorians don't want a repeat of the previous wave and are getting tested in droves BUT..... :( we really need to organise this better

The Box Hill Hospital testing site is very busy
An ABC colleague, who does not wish to be named, is there now waiting to be tested.
He arrived at 2:00pm was told that he would have to wait until 6pm to get tested.
Despite that, the ABC employee counted 30 people who still chose to line up behind him.

It's a shambles, testing should be available 24/7 and run by the military if staffing an issue.

Reports of people being turned away from testing sites in Victoria

Despite the increased testing capacity, there are reports of people being turned away from sites across Melbourne in recent days.

One man has told ABC Radio Melbourne that despite having symptoms, he's been unable to get a test because sites have been closed or at capacity.

"The one at Preston had the queue going from St George St all the way up to High Street and all the back streets were completely filled with cars so then I went to Heidleberg one which is the same story, this time they had someone out to the front with a sign saying they were suspended again," he said.

"Then I just arrived at the Epping one. It's completely full so it's the third day without being able to get tested."

    Martin Foley just announced:
Genomic sequencing results have been received from the samples from the Victorian outbreak and it has established they are directly linked to the New South Wales cluster.

It's an interstate import! Mind you 2 people from vic then tried exporting it out to southern NSW (Eden/Bermagui) o_Oo_Oo_O

Both the original Victorian and current NSW/VIC outbreaks were international imports.

Maybe time to close the international boarders completely and pay Australian residents to stay abroad.

Testing staff being called back from leave to get more testing capacity today according to Martin Foley (c/o ABC). Hopefully it mean less waiting.

And this is from 18,000 tests, surely not.

I can see why it happens though - I posted above (I think) of how I went and got tested in a completely "off-peak" time - only a few cars ahead of me - still took 20 min (I think)!! o_O The process really needs streamlining.

    abc.net,au:

Pair who allegedly fled from Melbourne Airport to NSW both face a $19,000 fine

The pair, who live in New South Wales, arrived on a flight from Canberra around 11:00am yesterday.

Police say authorised officers informed them that they must isolate 14 days but they then ran off and escaped from the airport after being picked up by a vehicle.

Mr Foley said they allegedly tried to avoid hotel quarantine.

"The advice I have is that those two people absconded from discussions with authorised officers at Melbourne Airport, they came in from Canberra, they did not have the appropriate declaration material and they would have been heading straight into compulsory hotel quarantine," he said.

"They absconded, they disappeared in a vehicle and they were next heard of in Goulburn in New South Wales.

"We are working with the New South Wales authorities. They will be facing at least a $19,000 fine each and perhaps a further breaches of Victorian public health regulations."

From midnight tonight, masks will be compulsory in NSW for people aged 12 and above in a few settings such as shopping, public transport, cinemas, etc

Northern part of the northern beaches remains under "stay at home" orders, but southern part is now considered part of Greater Sydney.

We know people who rushed to Brisbane on 21st December, from Victoria, avoiding Sydney (due to new outbreaks) as they'd planned originally, so they wouldn't get caught up in having to quarantine.

I've looked online, and it seems when they choose to return home (maybe 8th January), as long as they avoid the Greater Sydney area, and also avoid any NSW areas that might have current cases, they should be able to drive inland and get back into Victoria without quarantining once there. Does that sound about right (that's my reading of the Vic website anyway).

    Greater Sydney only.

NSW records seven COVID-19 cases, mandatory masks introduced in Greater Sydney

Ms Berejiklian confirmed wearing masks would be mandatory in several indoor venues from midnight tonight in Greater Sydney.

She said this would affect shopping centres, public transport, attending an entertainment venue like the cinema, places of worship, hair and beauty salons, gaming areas of establishments and staff in hospitality venues.

The mandatory mask rule will be enforced by a $200 fine, but a grace period will be in effect until Monday.

NSW Health said children under 12 will be exempt but are "encouraged to wear masks where practicable".
