    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had a cortisone injection done particularly in the ankle?

How did it work out for you?

    Is it worth doing?

I had an accident at work in November 2014 and my ankle still isn't right and the insurance company has closed the case and no more physio or exercise physiology which didn't seem to help much anyway. I went to 4 different physio which a couple of them were good at their job but didn't seem to do much for my injury.

I had one done under ultrasound for a frozen shoulder. It didn’t help. Others say it has helped them.

A friend’s daughter was unable to dance due to an ankle injury. Physio and specialist both said stay off it three
months. She took her to an accupuncturist who had her dancing in a couple of weeks. I see this guy too. He is amazing.

And my frozen shoulder was pain free in ten minutes when I mentioned it to a dietitian (first visit). I was gobsmacked!

I’d tried three different physios, regular chiro, massage over seven years as it grew more painful until I could almost not use it, but it kept getting worse. This dietitian is also an exercise physiologist and he treated the cause (the muscles joining my shoulder to my ribs etc) where everyone else was treating the shoulder itself.

He helped me over a dozen or so visits to retrain my muscles to relax and stop falling back into old muscle use patterns and I’ve been pain free for over a year.

Maybe look outside of the “expected” treatment for accupuncture and osteopath (recommended to me but not tried)?

Thanks for the reply. I think I have tried nearly everything. Physio, dry needling, tens machines, stretching exercises, massage and other things I can't remember. The only thing I haven't done is the injection. I'm running out of options. I'm up and down ladders all day and it's really taking its toll.

I think the main problem with cortisone is when you take it for years and years such as for certain diseases where you don't have much of a choice.

I don't think there is much of a problem if you take it a few times. It might not work but I don't think there is much of a downside to trying it as long as you are not taking it for years.

I took ibuprofen under the instruction of a physio, followed physio recommendations and mine is gradually getting better nearly two years later. My first ankle injury took ten years to really heal (no physio or follow up, possible broken foot bone) but a couple of weeks initially to get over the worst of it. I would talk to your GP and ask for a referral, you may need an xray, treatment for an ankle injury is relatively cheap compared to most medical issues and the money is worth it in the long run.

Cortisone is a good temporary measure that can help stop pain cycles. Best used in conjunction with other therapies that support the body healing while the pain is gone / reduced. After 20 years of back and leg pain i had two hips and an ankle operated on in 2016. Proper diagnosis took 19 of those 20 years, only happened once i found the right team. Can recommend some good people if you are in Brissie.

Have you seen a doctor and got imaging done to get a proper diagnoses of the injury? You haven't mentioned that. Physio etc might be great for certain things, other things they can do nothing.

Not ankle but wrist for me about 10 years ago.
Was lifting very heavy boxes by straps at work everyday and the pain was unbearable, like being sliced with a knife.
Could hear my tendon creaking every time I moved my wrist.
Had one shot and instant relief for 6 weeks till it gradually came back, was physically active with my wrist all that time.
Had a 2nd shot under ultrasound and the pain never came back again.
    Best thing ever !!!

I had it for RSI at the base of the thumb, didn’t do anything for my problem but as someone else said worse case scenario is it doesn’t help, never heard of it doing any harm.
    Worth a shot I’d say.

Have you tried eccentric heel drops for a long and consistent period?
I had Achilles tendon issues for almost 12 months and finally got over it through strengthening exercises and stretches.

Yes I have done heaps of different exercises to strengthen it. Heel raises and drops, balance board, roll ball under foot, leg press with min weights, stretch it out with an elastic strap and various other exercises. Nothing seems to be improving it.
