Caught that full story and actually it was still the UK and US they were talking about.

Is Australia dragging it's feet when it is saying the drug authority will not approve the vaccine until January and make supplies available until March (Pzifer linky) or is Australia in such a unique position that, like NZ, we can afford to wait with so few cases in the country (mostly repatriations in hotel quarantine)?

Strategically, is this a good idea ie remain isolated from the rest of the world or is it in keeping with best practice? The UK has said it will make the supply available first to the most vulnerable ie the old/nursing homes/essential workers etc then roll out to the rest afterwards. Does that mean, the companies with licences to manufacture in Oz, can ramp up production and export to the UK/Europe/US/India/SE Asia etc whilst awaiting local approvals?

Outcry at push to rate orange juice on a par with cola

It's a conspiracy I tell you! The cure literally grows on trees right here in Australia and don't need to import any frozen rubbish to treat our COVID patients.

A couple of glasses of fresh squeezed OJ and everyone will be good to go!

Lower health star rating? This stuff is the holy grail and should be exported around the world!!! :p

And maybe a vaccine which has been available for 50 years may help to protect young children.

We're not desperate and a few more months won't make a difference to us ... whereas it will in the northern sectors due to their massive daily rates (which leads to deaths). I'm more than happy to see how the en-masse vaccine goes before we take it on board.

There are also data yet to be released on which vaccine works best for each age group as, apparently, it does vary.

On a "grit teeth" note - I read this morning that 1/1,500 people in South Dakota are currently in hospital with Covid right now ... that's a staggering number for a so-so hospital system

Vaccinations here start in January, population has been divided into 15 groups looks like I´m in the last or 2nd last group so not available for me until 3rd quarter 2021. Spain has 160 million doses allocated double what they need, will help developing countries with the rest.

I´ll only get it quickly if I can use it to travel to Australia, there will be vax pass for international travel but who knows when/if Australia will join that system. Already travel here possible with -ve covid tests <72 hours old and Australia doesn't do that, and the vax is not 100% either, so probably Australia will not accept incoming vaccinated people anytime soon.

I seem to recall that most experts mentioned that a vaccine would be here in Australia in 12-18 months if things go to plan.
Corona started in Australia in March... so that means when it’s here in March 2021 (when the government plans to start), it will be 12 months, but there is a limited number of doses available and realistically, for it to be available to everyone, the government is saying September 2021... so that’s 18 months ;)

Nope, it’s better to be safe than sorry. The longer we wait, the more information we will have. Keep in mind. a lot is still not known, for example, how long does the vaccine last in the body for, what age group does it work best in, how safe is it (it’s going to approved with 2 months safety data- for emergency use) etc.
Plus, I think I read somewhere that we are only getting 10 million doses initially (so that’s going to be useful for 5 million people only). It would be selfish of us to get more when clearly the UK, USA, and Europe are out of control and need it more than we do.

Yep that's what l reckon and even the health minister said yesterday we're not desparate here now so they're holding off but expect to begin vaccinations in March.

Russia is beginning vaccinations right now with their vac.
Surprised the UK is using the American vac now theirs was also very good too so l wonder what's going on with that now.

UK medical regulator investigating adverse reactions to coronavirus vaccine

The United Kingdom's medical regulator is urgently examining reports of two serious adverse reactions to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The two cases are people with a history of allergies.

    ...

The regulator is now warning people who have a history of serious allergic reactions not to receive a vaccine.

Stephen Powis, medical director for the National Health Service in England, said in a statement both affected patients were "recovering well".

    ...

The medical regulatory agency also said vaccinations should not be carried out in facilities that did not have resuscitation equipment.

All vaccines have a risk - that's why you have to sit in the pharmacy for 10 minutes after they give you the flu shot, just in case.

However, as the risk is something like 1/1000,000, experts reckon it's worthwhile to ensure the other 999,999 are covered

From my limited understanding, the vaccine works but you might get a false positive to HIV.

No big deal, you're not really HIV positive. Apparently a HIV molecule is used in the vaccine to bind it together with whatever it's made of.

But the stigma of HIV is hard to swallow. So the vaccine has been canned.

    Mentioned in another thread.

(Just pointing out to save two different discussions).
