Not sure why this isn't being discussed more.
We have seen the QLD potentially cure...
Researchers want to trial drug ‘cure’ for coronavirus on patients

What gets me is why did it take a patient telling the doctor what to give him.
Why was this doctor able to just give it to them and can't give it to other patients?

He said the research was sparked by Chinese patients, who were first given the drug in Australia, showing their doctors information on the internet about the treatment used overseas.

“Our doctors were very, very surprised that a HIV drug could actually work against the novel coronavirus and there was a bit of scepticism,” he said.

“That first wave of Chinese patients we had (in Australia), they all did very, very well when they were treated with the HIV drug.

“That’s reassuring … that we’re onto something really good here.”

@See Change can you maybe give some insight.
I know there are other medical professional on here.

Looks like this treatment is being used across the globe.
Is this why Wuhan could contain so quickly?

Is there now just a patent war going on?

They are trialling a bunch of antivirals. Needs much more extensive testing before rolling out more widely.

It can take a year or two to get through the appropriate clinical trials.

These aren't new drugs, they're already in use. Does it take 2 years to be able to give existing approved medicine for other uses as it wasn't setup for that use?
Understand if it's completely new drug.
Also how was the doctor able to give it to the first arrival and not further?

You're right. I imagine there's still a significant process they need to go through though. Back to Dr Google!

Dr's are all about precedence and what has been proven in medical trials..
I find it ironic that a HIV drug could cure covid-19. HIV is an example where infected people were crying out to be included in medical trials, meanwhile dropping like flies due to protocols

They have to be very careful that the cure isn't worse than the cause ... I guess if you're on deaths door then it doesn't matter ... but for the 99% of other people with the virus (or 85% that don't need hospitalisation) they need to make sure that they're not setting you up for future health problems

I get that but if people are dying why don't we (AUS) approve 'emergency use'...
Media should be focusing on this, more pressure about this would move things faster.

They are talking about drugs which are already out there, which have been tested extensively. The path to getting them out there is a lot shorter that the path for a vaccine, which needs still to be proven for safety.

What they need to ensure is that they are a really effective.

Chloroquine is one that has been mentioned, including a trial being held in Queensland.

My wife has health issues which make her more susceptible to infections, but one drug which has been given to her for her existing issues has chloroquine.

The US Pres yet again said something that wasnt fact. Some research indicated that drug was ineffective tooand perhaps a placebo effect. The US FDA was horrified. Oh and Elon Musk is also a drug expert now and claims it as a proven cure.

There is NO KNOWN cure for stupidity.

No drug yet has any proven effect on coronavirus, to be clear. The current status is that any drug, even if proven for human usage, needs to have approval for trials for coronavirus treatment. Chloroquine has been effective on treating some viruses, and has killed COVID-19 viruses in a test tube, but needs a lot more research to determine if it is effective.

And that the combination doesn't have adverse affects and that they don't negatively impact with other drugs already taken etc

If one was to look at the simple numbers that on every one hundred people visiting a car park doctor for this problem how many once they know their result is safe would end up with a prescription for a benzodiazepine for sleep disorders and anxiety..Works both way i guess in the investment world and the big pharmas are all chained linked in one form or another..
