Just starting a thread of stuff you think the general public (should) know... but not necessarily!

    I'll start...
I was hand peeling an orange at lunch, and I used the segments to split it into pieces.
My colleague said "I was wondering how you were going to eat that. I didn't know oranges had segments (like a mandarin)"

Same colleague: "I didn't know chocolate (Cocoa) came from a plant" (did she think it was a mineral?)

Note... this colleague is a vegetarian....

Another individual... almost finished a university (UNSW) property development course (2 courses to complete) and is working for a developer.

We were having a conversation on Facebook and I mentioned OTP twice. He had to ask... "what's OTP"?
    OMG....

Please add your own facepalm conversations!

I live with a housemate who does not know where Christchurch or Adelaide are. (He is the sort of guy who thinks he knows more about life than he really does)

Probably works with real developments, anyone with any sense doesn't touch OTP and definitely not taught at Kenso Kindy. It's only a strategy to secure finance.

Conversation with a local on a ferry in America:

    1. "So; do you guys have industry in Australia?"

    2. "Where is Australia?"

Makes me wonder why Pollies (and others) are always on the airwaves, handwrining about what they think the rest of the world will think about Aus if we do/don't do XYZ..

    3. "We are only taking in 10,000 refugees; we should be ashamed"

(This is on top of the normal 12,000 we take every year).

Incidentally; USA - 10,000 refugees (Population 300mill - Aus population 22mill) Saudi Arabia - nil.

Newsflash Australia; the world could give two rat's @rses about what we do/don't do.

Just like if Australia does nothing about climate change it'll make no difference whatsoever (as we contribute 《1% of greenhouse gasses).

    LOL! don't start me.

I was gunna dd that in actually, but thought; nah.

Oh yes; shame on us; at least MB is over there fighting the good fight...unlke TA. o_O

    On that; I did a calc based on the best guess prediction of the temp improvement we might produce by the end of the Century if we introduced Carbon Emissions etc, and extrapolated that % out to the whole planet's percentage;

an improvement of about 1/100th of a degree at best.

    Sorry; back to the thread.

A friend has twins, a daughter and a son.

He has been asked more than once if they are identical.

Problem is; anyone who brings up a genuine point on anything is automatically branded a racist - even if the point is just stating a fact.

Customer/s brings in cars for tyres which are worn down to the steel belts visible, gets the elcheapo replacements, then asks; "Are these tyres safe?" o_O

That is not all that uncommon.

My sister went to Michigan State Uni. Michigan is broadly the shape of your left hand. In conversations about 'where are you from' its quite common to hold your left hand out and point roughly to where you live (in Michigan).
She regularly said "I am from Australia" and had people hold out their left hand and ask "where is that". The look on their faces when she pointed to blank air, outside of thier world, must have been quite priceless.

I am regularly pulling up maps to show people Australia (and explaining that Sydney does not cover the whole country - but that is mostly to Sydney siders :p).

Me: I really don't like the taste of VB, it tastes of diacetyl and lightstrike

    You: Racist!

    Me: umm?

I don't think your argument works on every 'genuine point on anything.'

My retort to 'how do you tell them apart' was 'I have to pick them up by one leg to check', then they realize how dumb the question is.

Yesterday, my 9 year old was reading about causes and consequences of hyperinflation in Zimbabwe and Germany.....I am so proud.

It's school holidays here. He did it because of personal interest.
