I found it extremely useful to get a SIM card with data when we were in Penang. I wish I'd done it before we tried checking into our Airbnb though, it would have made things soooo much easier. Especially for you if there's a problem with flights.

Though there should be wifi at the airport.

I have an iPad pro which apparently has an internal sim. I’ll be traveling to NZ a couple of times this year. With my phone I just replace my normal Australian sim with a NZ sim.

But not quite sure how to get a data service on the iPad in NZ - since I won’t need to switch to a NZ sim (I assume)?

An iPad is either wifi only or has a removable Sim.

There's a model number on the bottom which, when decoded, can tell you what sort it is. Mine is A1489 which tells me it's an iPad 2 mini wifi.

Mine is an iPad Pro WiFi +cellular model. There is no removable sim. But I don’t know how to access data in NZ. I don’t have mobile data here as I only use the iPad at home.

I was going to go to the apple store and ask - but thought I may as well try here too - seeing the previous comment about sims and data.

Later edit: the Apple site talks about apple sims and says my iPad Pro is compatible with the carriers Spark and Vodofone in NZ - but I’m just not sure about the logistics of getting access...

An alternative (which would work with a wifi only iPad as well) would have been to take a phone, get a SIM card there, and use it as a hotspot for your iPad.

Good idea. I will take a phone anyway and already have a NZ sim for that from previous trips.

And now I know that all I need to do to get data directly is to open the settings etc and add the iPad mobile data using the integrated apple sim once I land.

    Thank you.

Fyi I've been to Penang in July....there'll be lots of Middle Eastern tourists if history is any guide.

Less if you stick to Georgetown but at the beach (Batu Ferringhi)....

Thought I'd update how it went. Two things saved us
    1. Just taking carry on luggage
    2. Getting the right person at the Changi airport who allowed us to go straight to our next flight. (Rather than out through customs and back in through customs).
    3. Had an additional scare with the plane initially leaving an over an hour late.

    Thanks for the SIM tips
Malaysia has 'Grab' - their version of Uber and it was great. Need a Malaysian SIM - phone number.
If you don't mind busses - the Penang Rapid bus is good value - 30rm ($10 AU) for 7 days unlimited use. Georgetown also has a free town bus.

We tried the hop on, hop off bus service in Penang. After waiting for 50 minutes, we caught an Uber.

    How did you like Penang?

Penang is great. We stayed in Batu Ferringhi. I would like to go back as I feel we just dipped our toes in.

What does this mean. Why would you leave the airport? I say this as Im at Changi every 3 weeks.

I booked the two flights separately after a change in our plans. Changing existing flights to go Mel to Pen was going to cost more than booking the Sin to Pen leg. So we had Mel to Sin and then Sin to Pen - same airline but not booked in the same booking so not treated as a connecting flight. This is what Jetstar told me. I was advised to speak with someone at the counter at Changi.

Are you saying I could have just checked in online and walked straight to the gate? It's been 12 years since we've travelled OS and we were a bit rusty.

Since you only took carry on, there would be no reason to exit the terminal. You would just go to the gate for your next flight. A different story if you had bags that had not been checked through to your final destination.
