    Hi All,

My partner and I are looking to purchase a block within the next few months and build our own home.

Neither of us have done this before.. could anyone recommend something to read/listen to that has all the basics for building?

    Thanks a lot
    Maddy

Great book for beginners - the 3 little pigs by Joseph Jacobs.

Goes into construction materials, methods, natural disasters, repossession / financial issues / strong arm tactics used. Very much aimed at the owner builder.

You mean have it built by a builder or you act as the owner/builder? If its the latter, personally I wold not recommend that, especially if you have no clue at all what you're doing.

Most building reps sitting in display homes will be highly familiar with the process so that would be a good starting point.

Many brokers also have a lot of experience with the home building process and will be able to advise you as well.

I have built a few times and whilst many find it stressful I personally find it enjoyable and exciting watching the progress and then seeing the finished product.

Your builder should be doing all that for you. If you want to know more about the process then have a look at this link.

Finance and contract are two essential elements you need to get right at the start!!!! everything else comes after in my opinion.
