    Well... this is just weird.

I'm on FB just a little earlier, messaging with a friend and as I'm messaging, I'm scrolling down. She's mentioned chiropractic and her husband's back injury. Next thing, up comes a chiropractic post and link.

I then message her to ask if she has heard about another friend who has hurt her knee again, and had an MRI. Next post is about an MRI.

There's no talking. It's bia messanger, and just a bit creepy.

I told her I'm now going to ask about horses, to see if anything comes up about horses. She said I should mention hot men. No posts about horses or hot men have shown up yet.

    Coincidence?

Facebook knows everything. All adverts and sponsored links are targeted.

Facebook tracks absolutely everything you do on there site - including in messenger.

They also track you on many websites. It's called a Facebook pixel - publishers add it to their website code and then once you visit the site, Facebook knows that this is a subject you are interested in and can use that for targeted adverts.

More information here: All the Ways Facebook Tracks You—and How to Limit It

FWIW, I do NOT run a Facebook pixel on PropertyChat - although you can optionally use Facebook to log into PropertyChat, which is a separate thing.

Its the reason you get all those ads for things you just purchased. It is not as smart as you think.

Thanks for that link Simon. I'm not too worried about seeing adverts on FB. I've found some great products this way. I have no details at all on FB, not my correct date of birth, schools. work... nothing. My info on FB is pretty basic. But it sounds like FB could collect things like my DOB from other sites.

I'm sure nobody is interested in me, except to target things to sell to me. I just had never noticed the direct, almost immediate link to what I'd just typed in messenger.

I use marketplace a bit, and at times when I have found the "chair" (or whatever I'm looking for) and don't want to see any more chairs, I'll do a search for something random to throw it off its game. :D

I will check again tomorrow and see if I can do more to ensure my details stay safe.

I never answer those stupid questions that people put up. You know...the ones like "Your porn star is the colour of your underware and your mothers maiden name."

I recently made a fb account with a throwaway email address so I can see what's in my local marketplace. I don't have any phone numbers, friends, photos or personal info linked on that account. Only have my first name written twice and a fake DOB with maximum privacy settings applied. Much better that way

I read somewhere these questions are attempts at getting stupid people to divulge personal information so their accounts can be hacked. The answers to a lot of these questions are the same security ones used to reset passwords on your accounts

You had that 5G vaccine, so it's not coincidence at all.

    It's telepathetic.

    On a similar topic:
We were watching TV last night, a non-ABC station, and the ads that came during the show were for items we discussed at the same time, such as what we were eating for dinner and what model car we mentioned.

Next tech in this space will be speech to text and targeted ad based on that, I suspect it’s already happening :)

Facebook is morally corrupt and is responsible for countless terrible events. I have stopped using it, although I don't see a problem with people staying connected to family and friends, the main issues are the fake news and other ways they influence those who are easily led.

They're fishing for password info ... name of your dog and grandmothers name

I love fb to connect with friends and family, and are very select in friends ... and don't mind the ads too much as they remind me of something I recently search but haven't yet bought ... like outdoor furniture I want to try before buy once out of lockdown

I was reading about google (off memory) using proximity to pair profiles, so say your friend of similar age and gender, it knows you have sent emails back and forth, then over the course of a afternoon play some sport then grab a drink (location data) you may find it will start serving you adds based on their preferences, and if you respond then it will validate and double down on that topic.

Assumption being your friend may have told you about xyz service or product (it doesn't listen via open mic 24/7), it knows this friend is one of your top 5 people in your life, then you respond to the ad so it really really things you spoke about it and effectively the ad now has a personal recommendation.

I am sure facebook is similar with messenger + marketplace + facebook + facebook groups it forms quite a strong profile of you.
