But flip it around the other way, and use the patriotic US as an example instead, and it's all perfectly reasonable.

What about Iraq & Afghanistan...both fails for the US. Starting wars for profit ! US Army only good on paper.

I don't particularly want to be the meat in the sandwich between China and USA.

Most people in powerful countries haven't gone through the horrors of war. None of these terror attacks or war movies would come close to it. That is dangerous!

Actually there’s a deep sense of regret going through Vietnamese society over communism and alignment with China. With the loss of huge sea territory and resources to China staring them in the face I’m pretty sure Vietnam would rather be dominated by the US than by China if they had their choice again.

This regret is compounded when one looks at countries such as South Korea. At the time of the Vietnam war South Korea was at the same stage of economic/social/political development as South Vietnam, but look where they are now. They succeeded because they were able to remain in the US alliance.

If we must live under someone’s hegemony, clearly a US one would be better than a Chinese one. At least with the US we have a degree of protection provided by the existence of a vigorous civil society. That’s exactly what happened when the US got involved in Vietnam: the anti-war movement, an expression of civil society, was a major contributor to their defeat.

Negative. An assumption from someone who wasn't there. Nice try though.

I do not think an full on war will be happening since it will soon escalate to nuclear war heads thrown around everywhere. The nuclear balance out of fear of guarranteed mutual wipe out is the best outcome and pass 70 years has proven it.
