just wanting to check a private builder I’m looking to sign up with is financially secure, good credit, no court cases etc

I’ve checked google, asic searched name, business abn, creditorwatch,

    All looks good

Are there any other checks I should do prior to signing up with a builder or have I covered the main steps...

    Cheers

    Fair trading/VCat for licensing
Dunn & Bradstreet report for financials
Trade references - Brick/Concrete suppliers, finishing trades (last guys in are the ones who are usually left unpaid).

Are you contracting with a person or a company?

A person could easily start a new company to hide past dodginess.

You could do a personal bankruptcy search to see if they have ever been bankrupt

D&B or other of the official agents searches can show Directorships and history. Historical costs a little more than current. Look for dereg and liquidations. Fees are modest per company search that then results and may be a great investment (or a waste of time)

Ask them for addresses of any recent builds (last 2 years) and go door knocking. A good builder will be happy to let you know and proud of their work
