Ones that may return some good money to fill the pockets over tax time

Im also potentially looking to setup a business, so maybe one that has a strength in this area and can help with it. Not sure exactly what i need but im looking to just setup say a website for tips ect so wondering what i require for this regards company/business?

    Hiya

Do you need a local accountant? Can you deal via email/phone/Skype? If so - you could use any accountant anywhere in Aus.

There's some good ones on here - in particular, @Paul@PFI

    Cheers

I guess not. Do accountants not have to be local as such?

Certainly email i could thats for sure.

What do i look for in finding a quality account? What are some aspects to look for?

Most service professionals can assist from a distance.

Hes a hard man to get in touch with it seems.

That email of his doesnt seem to work. A few bounced but i believe one was delievered. Otherwise no response so far.

Thanks for the advice i will widen my look.

Was going to use a local but they also didnt respond. My mate reckons he only earnt 40-50k last year and got 5k back in tax. I paid money and earnt similar but also had a house. He didnt at the time now he will get far more with increased income and tax depreciation form new build.

Any comments/thought about the above would be appreciated

    Thanks

He quite possibly didn't claim the tax free threshold to be getting that kind of refund on that income (or had HECS withheld and didn't hit the threshold so got it refunded). That's an unusual level of refund for the income without one of those circumstances or a -ve geared property/investment which you've ruled out! Not impossible by any means just unusual.

It doesn't matter what you get back. It matters how much you have saved.

I like that saying. I guess its a combination of both.

Can you enlighten me to what accountants do/can do and how and what they can save money in?

Newb in this area and learning at a young age.

You can almost train a monkey to get your tax back, a good accountant provides a hell of a lot more than that

Tax on $50k works out to be $7792. So to get $5000 back the person could have had $12,792 pa taken from their pay each paytime over a year.

A similar person earning $50,000 may have had to pay $2000 extra to the ATO because their employer only took $5,792 out in tax over the year.

Both of these people earned the same income and paid the same tax, but the first would tell their mates "Great accountant, I got $5k back" while the second would be saying "Bloody accountant, I had to pay $2000 extra to the ATO this year".

In reality the result was the same, it was just that the amounts the employers deducted for tax was wrong in both cases.

Both accountants are just as good as each other.
