I have a flat concrete slab - like, almost perfectly flat. This is obviously a problem, as rain water just lays on the slab and doesn't drain. It's about 4m x 4m roughly square.

I want to get the water to drain into a garden bed, positioned about 1/3 of the way along one side of the slab. I assume this could be done by cutting shallow slots in the concrete, then grinding away to create a shallow V drain?

Is this a common fix? What other options do I have?!

25-50mm grand topping or ardit/ardur topping.

Nah - topping's not an option as the top of slab is only 50mm below the damp course of my house... I need to go down not up! :)

Scabble the entire surface then top it.
