The problem is they're saying it is secure which suggests a lack of strategies to mitigate the consequences of it being hacked. One of the easiest ways to mitigate this is to not collect irrelevant data.

My main objection is linking your name to the census. Address, age, income, health, even religion, they're all relevant to government planning. The only reason I can conceive why they need peoples names is to follow up those who don't complete the census, but why retain it?

Certainly all the information is available in other databases, but not in such a consolidated and indexed way. You can Google me and figure out where I live and work, but you won't know my DOB (I lied on Facebook), income or religion. At best my health status will be me complaining about Man Flu on social media. To get all of the census information from other sources it would need to be a directed inquiry towards me at multiple points, not a general hack of a single data source.

I support the census, but I also think they need to be only asking relevant questions (or at least educate the public why your name is relevant).

One interesting point of data they are likely collecting (which is not on the questionnaire) is your computer IP address. The government will now be able to associate data with peoples names. This information has been heavily protected by ISPs with reasonable success in the past, that's about to disappear. People would be well served to log in via a VPN or to use a paper form.

I was communicating with one of my airbnb guests... around midday yesterday, checking that she received the letter.... I said to her the census was supposed to be filled in even by guests and she had no issues with that. Boy oh boy did I have foresight though with saying don't wait till the evening! :)

Are the same people that complained about voting not being online complaining about the census being online? I hope so #straya :D

The census site was consistently giving a "website down" message all day ("try again in 15 minutes").

Now it only actually loads the fail page a part of the time.

I still can't access the site.

    Turnbull is blaming IBM now.

Other people who know Canberra well are placing the blame on cuts by governments of both persuasions, trimming the budgets severely but still expecting everything to run completely as it always has.

Looks like they've posted some new jobs on the ABS website already:

Excitement! (but hopefully not too many Australians get excited at once and prompt another DDoS shutdown! :D)

Whilst the ABS is grilled by everyone, they can at least be thankful Stalin wasn't running the show.[IMG][IMG]

Just heard on the news, an alarming people think they did the Census and didn't, they went to the Telstra owned site sensis.com.au and filled out the online feedback form.

    I mean seriously.

Are we that dumb as a country?

I think we know the answer to that.

At least Telstra expanded their data base for cold calling.

Okay, I think the ABC wins #censusfail in the best video parody category

I love a good parody. This is a good one and the noble cause of trying to get more people registered to vote.
