But the reactions on this thread are not surprising. History always repeats itself as humankind is unable to learn from its past mistakes. For people who have not lived through totalitarian regimes, the possibility of this even happening seems unimaginable. The main argument seems to be: well, they aren't gonna do anything bad with this info, so I don't care if they collect it. Even if that is true today, nobody can predict if that will hold true in the future.
I am very surprised nobody seems to care all their personal information will be centrally located and at risk of being hacked and sold online. For an audience who relies heavily on credit scores and such, even if you are not concerned with privacy, doesn't this bother you?
And what do you make of the fact that they are suddenly asking for names where up to now it was optional? What is the good reason for that?

But the Census data is not all my personal information!

Nothing gathered by the Census will affect my credit scores. Why would it? Unless a bank won't lend to an atheist!

I'd have to prove my income with statements anyway.

I meant as in if the information you provide the ABS results in your identity being stolen.

Anyway, there is no point to this discussion, everyone makes their own mind and has their own opinion, this isn't gonna change anything, so I'll probably won't spend more time getting involved in this discussion.

Ouga do you have any social media?

Or do you get mail delivered to where you live?

Either of these opens to possibility of identity theft.

Yes, but that happens one at a time. And it does happen, you're right. But it doesn't (yet) happen with the entire population of the country! And physical identity theft takes time and energy; hacking to get 25 million records out of a computer system is a lot easier. There is a huge difference between one-offs and the whole thing. It's another reason why electronic voting is damned hard - commiting voter fraud when everyone has to turn up to vote or make some effort is hard, but doing it against a computer system, even if just in one or two polling booths, is much much easier.

No, but the suburb you live can start effecting your insurance - that happens already.
And any illnesses may definitely effect your credit worthyness since they may indicate you won't be around for a 30 year loan repayment - oh you say, the electronic health records are nice and secure. Bingo - ABS is looking at connecting your census record with the electronic health records (search the news - ABS and mental health for example).

Interestingly, so many of my colleagues either didn't receive the census letter or accidently threw it out, thinking it was junk mail. Then they try to call the census line....

    I can't even log on.

I hope the census logs the people that tried to complete it tonight! Lol
Of course the country all jumping on was going to have a long queue! :p

You have to end of Sept to submit and could have completed it before tonight. Again no one reads the fine print :D

But it's the census hype! Kicked back with a stubby in hand, laptop on lap and ready to submit before failing :(

What's the name of that activity where you settle in to watch the funny social commentary on an utterly predictable, but monumental fail?

I don't agree with this. I could turn up at ten different polling booths in my area, give the name of ten different neighbours and vote ten times. They will still vote themselves unless they turn up at the same booth I visit when I use their name.

I've always thought it absolutely ludicrous that we don't have to show any sort of ID to vote.
