Currently in USA gobsmacked at the prices of luxury cars.

Like to own a Porsche Carrera S at $88,800, this is what you will pay in USA, we will pay around double in Australia.. damn it.

Why cars cost more here than in the US

Only problem is they drive on the wrong side of the road.

I seriously looked at buying a couple of luxury cars out of the U.K. And shipping them at one point. I could pick up an Aston Martin DB9 for under $100k. They were selling here for about $200k
Even after paying for everything there was still a solid $50k in it.

Not so lucrative now with the Aus$ weaker.

A lot of rust issues with the UK cars, particularly the floors because of the salted roads.

And that article was when the Australian dollar was about on parity with the USD- and when there was more manufacturing of cars in Australia than now. It will probably a much bigger difference now.

Cars have always been far cheaper there- something I noticed in 1971.

Bringing back more manufacturing into the US should make the difference between there and here somewhat smaller.

Taxes should be dropped soon as we now make virtually no cars in Aus. So theoretically EVERY car will be an Import shortly.

Duty is already gone for almost all countries and has been for a number of years under FTA's.
Luxury car tax on top of GST however will make a massive difference to the RRP of 'expensive' cars.

I have lived in the US twice and both times the cars, dollar for dollar against pay levels, were just so much cheaper it would bring you to tears coming back to Australia.

There's too much money and vested interests tied up in the established car importers/dealerships. Wish we'd adopt similar regulations to NZ, wouldn't mind a cheapie rx8 or 350Z for some weekend cruising or track days.

You reckon overseas cars will get cheaper? I really hope so, wanting a Porsche gt3rs or something realistically affordable(in American dollars) like a Cayman gts. 160+ for the Cayman here and half the price in America. Or even a BMW m2 for just over 50 instead of 100k. I'm gonna keep wishing and saving

Hate to be a downer but I seriously doubt that any import taxes on cars (luxury or otherwise) will be reduced, just because we no longer have a domestic car industry to protect. Think about it - why would politicians voluntarily reduce the amount of tax they can collect?

Because they won't be getting chauffeured around in a new Holden Statesman Caprice very shortly. And because I'm an optimist. :p

I was hoping to buy a Comaro.

I might settle for a set of extractors for the commodore.

We cant complain, cars are currently the cheapest they have ever been.

For example 25 years ago, a brand new Nissan Pulsar was $23,626 (Link) and now they start from $19,990. Hasn't gone up in price in a quarter of a century!! Wages and everything else has.

Surely not sustainable, I see more car manufacturers collapsing in the future.
