Hi all, need some advice please...haven't done this before.

Need to replace the old vinyl in the kitchen+laundry, as well as the aged carpet in the rest of the house. The property is in Launceston, Tasmania.

    Story so far:
Agent got quotes from one place - I had to ask several times for information on the quoted product. So far I've been sent a link for the vinyl (Gerflor Primetex), but just photos and a name for the carpet. For a couple of reasons, I don't trust the advice or the details from the flooring company.

Does anyone have any recommendations on:
    - a decent flooring company around Launceston. Doesn't have to be the best pricing if they are honest & reliable.
    - a good choice of carpet. I've read about solution-dyed nylon being great, but this isn't a fancy property (rent is $270/wk) so what's the next best? According to the company that provided the quote, polypropylene is the cheapest, entry-level carpet. They quoted on a solution dyed polyester twist pile carpet at unit price $69, with QTY = '27.9m'. not sure what this means.

    Any advice appreciated.

We went with solution dyed nylon in our rentals 18 months ago. It feels like wool, looks great and was cheap because I sourced it from a supplier that specialised in end of roll or discontinued carpets (Brisbane).

I recall when looking that polypropylene felt cheap and nasty underfoot. So I think what we chose was perfect for our rentals.

Always a worry when you only get a quote from one supplier for something that will be a major cost. Backhanders to the agent? Ask for a couple more quotes or get details and ring a few yourself.

Most carpet is 3.6m wide and the 27.9m is the linear measure.

That's interesting...will look for suppliers of discontinued stuff.
Any comment on the quoted solution-dyed polyester?

Thanks for the info on measurement.

I actually did try to get quotes from 3 other places, but only one replied with incomplete info. It's like the flooring sales people are so busy they're not interested or something.

If you are asking for comment (pricing), I've just looked back and the carpet we used was a charcoal colour called Lunar Ridge and we used a good quality underlay to help with the "feel" under foot.

We had three bedrooms (not large) supplied and laid for $1160 including the tiny capping at the doorways. The price per metre is not on the invoice unfortunately.

That's awesome, thanks for looking up and posting those details. I've been quoted almost $5500 for a solution dyed nylon carpet for 3 bedrooms, hallway, lounge and dining (and taking out the old carpet and underlay). I know Tassie tends to be pricier on some things but this seems exorbitant now compared to your outlay, assuming all else is equal.

I've just asked the agent to get some more quotes.

We had two homes carpeted last year. First one was 4 x beds & hallway, second was 3 x beds & hallway. We paid $2000-2500 for each of them. One was the cheap polypropylene, the other was also a cheapy, but had a more expensive feel to it. The cheaper carpet looked much better when laid, and according to the carpet people, will last longer for a tenanted property. We removed the old carpet ourselves. This was just a standard franchise locally. Hope that gives you an idea of price.

Another thing we have done in the past is buy a roll of carpet from a local Brisbane carpet auction house and we just paid a carpet layer to lay it. This was for our own house and it was a very cheap way of getting a good wool carpet.

I'd never put wool into any house again though, no matter how cheap it is, because the case moth gets into it and that little moth can eat the carpet under beds, table legs, and would survive a nuclear blast too.

    Hello.

I happen to live in Launceston and was looking at carpet today.

There are a few places in town so I only went to one shop to get a sense of pricing.

I was told that in addition to the cost of the carpet, it was $40 for underlay plus $40 for installation (both per linear metre).

utter budget stuff (that is probably OK for your property based on your description was $69 per linear metre (product only).

The stuff I liked was $150 per linear metre but that was wool.

they had rolls of the rock bottom budget stuff in stock (or on order) but because of the lockdown in Vic there are now issues getting stock and anything beyond rock bottom budget may take some time to source. NZ shutdown is also anticipated to impact on some supply chains.

If you want to DM me with measurements I’m happy to ask for quotes as I sort out my own.

Or google for carpet in Launceston, pick a national chain and then go into one of their stores near you, discuss what you need/want and you need 27.9lm, when its comes down to a quote supply the Tassie address :p

It wouldn't surprise me that with the recent property growth in the Apple island that there is more of this type of work than trades available to do it

well a buddy is re-carpeting using carpet squares from Bunnings ( i hold WES and BWP )

i don't know if this carpet is particularly fire resistant a BIG deal in renting to smokers is fairly thin but rubber backed ( have no idea what the top is )

cheaper and you could probably install it yourself with some basic skills (ROUGHLY one metre square , they are not precisely one metre or square .. LOL ) so watch what pattern you choose assuming you have a choice

    cheers

PS i have never been to Tasmania , local info is beyond my skill set but am guessing there will be a Bunnings within a reasonable travel distance

We are thinking of doing the whole house with laminate except for bathrooms. I just wondered if we could negotiate on pricing from the quotes or ticketed prices including underlay and labour. We had some carpets done in our previous house about 4 years ago and just paid the full price including underlay and labour and removal/disposal of old carpets. We are looking at Quick Step and Kronotex at Carpet court and will be getting a few quotes this time as we will have some time.

You can get a decent discount if you remove & dispose of the previous carpet yourself.

Thanks for the heads up, I’m getting the quote done onsite tomorrow so I’ll see how much I can get off. He was suggesting to me in the shop yesterday that they don’t usually do skirting boards and to remove/replace them would cost a bit more - can’t recall how much now. He also said that if I choose to go with quads they’d make my laminate flooring look cheaper although cheaper and easier to install.

is it because it doesn’t seal the expansion space properly? The guy was just telling me about its looks.

    Mainly the looks.

But also because most of the cheaper flooring isn't nailed / secured to the floor, they seesaw up and down as people walk over them (very subtly), eventually causing some of the beading to pop. I always see a few bits of beading here and there pop off completely or they might be a bit loose and it all just looks and feels horrible. When you bump up against them with the vacuum cleaner head you can tell they aren't firmly attached after a while. The cheapness of the whole thing radiates everywhere lol
