I'll be visiting Oz in the new year and want to buy a car for $10-12k.
Can anyone recommend a decent one which is low maintenance? I rented a Nissan QashQai (CashCar) for 4 months on a recent trip and like the body style/size but don't know what other options are available as I've been living o'seas nearly 10 years. I want an auto with air con. Any suggestions are appreciated!

What other features do you need?

E.g. towing ability, number of seats...

Don't need to tow heavy things, maybe just a Bunnings trailer on the odd occasion. Want something that will carry 4 adults comfortably. Don't want a big vehicle, something like the pic I've attached, mid size I guess.

    Honda Jazz or VW Golf.
Both cars are small but fuel efficient and you will be surprise with the booth space. 2nd row can be knocked down to make a huge booth space.

I like Ford Mondeo, turbo diesel gets around 1000 klms per tank, probably pick up a 2013 model with low klms in that price range

Thats cheap... if that's true then cars depreciate crazy quickly.

The sensible option here is a Camry. Parts dirt cheap, super reliable and very spacious.

Devoid of all fun though....you need to approach it more like an appliance than a car.

    However...they are damn fine appliances.

The problem with this car is very high kms for a 5 year old car. The engine would probably be trashed.....

    I have a 2012 Liberty and only 50000kms.

Bought a Mondeo wagon for the Adelaide IT business a few months ago, paid $12k ex GST for it, turbo diesel which goes really well. Had 70k on it. Comfortable to drive, effortless torque and acceleration.

Seems like the Mondeo has a good name but I thought the main advantage of a diesel over unleaded is they're good if you're running the motor for long periods but servicing/maintenance is much more exy. What year is your model Dave?

I think average in Oz is 20k kilometres a year so I guess you don't drive it much?

or a Kia Sorrento would be better same thing as a Santa Fe but has 2 more years warrantee which means you may still get a few years manufacturors warrantee even on an older one, and a suspension better tuned for Australian roads.

I'm in the Corolla camp ... drop the back seats and it turns into a Tardis that holds just as much as hubby's Pajero. Cheap to run and service - and reliable

Can't go wrong with a Toyota petrol for basic reliability with little maintenance.

I had 155,000 on my 2010 GT when I got rid of it in April, great car, if anyone is going to thrash a subie it's usually a wrx, some hammer the gt's but not the standard econobox ones.
