I mostly use my car for out-of-town journeys. Mainly walk or catch a bus. Pretty easy to get around many areas of Canberra but your location is a determinate too.

Unless I am heading off I probably fill up the car once a month but I don't keep a record of that.

We are not car centric. I take my unicycle and then public transport to get to and from work. I'm lucky the public transport is frequent and I have a lot of express services. Partner rides his pushbike then takes a bus, though he could very easily ride the whole way (it's within 3 km from home).

We only really use our car to get to leisure activities, aerial tissue, volleyball and to go to unicycle hockey or weekend trips. I wouldn't even specifically take a car to go grocery shopping either I'd do it in conjunction with something else, or there's Coles in my suburb and I would unicycle there (the shopping I do isn't huge, generally whatever fits in my 30 litre backpack).

Its 1 car shared between 2 adults, and if my partner has volleyball Thursday nights it's his car for the night. We sometimes have to coordinate who has the car, but it's usually very easy.

Do you chain your unicycle to the bike rack then come back 10 minutes later saying "Agggghhhh!, someone stole my bike frame"? :D

I usually push my uni around in the supermarket!

This morning I was walking to the station as I've welding class tonight and I'll get a lift home with a classmate. I'm lucky, two other people doing welding are also from my part of Epping and so I don't need to drive! (There's also the train available, but a lift home beats public transport) :)

Anyway, while on my walk a guy who was walking the other way on my street says "Where's your cycle?" And indicated like pedalling with his hands.

    So, I'm locally famous :)

I'd like to get a Penny Fartting. That would be so cool. Probably harder to ride than a unicycle.

Is Penny one of your fantasies? Does she have dietary issues or intolerances? :p

I made a small penny farthing (with help on the welding side)... as a unicyclist it was annoying to ride and I can see why the front wheel got so big (no gears!) I felt like I just wanted to take my feet off the pedals on the flats, direct drive, can't freewheel.
It's bad for uphills and downhills too.

I didn't put a brake on it, if you take your feet off the pedals and the thing starts going fast it's really hard to get your feet back on the pedals as they spin around very quickly.
So in this way, bikes with gears and ability to freewheel are so superior. At least with unicycles there's the fun challenge of riding it. I'd love to be able to freewheel on a uni but I'm not skilled enough yet to do it.

That's a chauffeur driven unicycle, the back seat passenger gets a free ride & you get to sit on the handlebars.

I think we're fast approaching the next transport revolution - ebikes aren't as well known amongst the general population yet and are a little too expensive still, but they have the potential to disrupt a lot of commuter travel.

Provided that you have separated bike paths for safety (this is the biggest issue holding this back), then with an ebike - you can easily commute to work with relatively little effort (no shower required when you get there), and low running costs. Parking is much easier, but needs to be secure. You also need secure storage at home - those cyclone wire cages found in many apartment carparks aren't good enough.

If someone can produce a reliable and easy to ride ebike for around $500, I think that will be a game changer for many people - provided the other infrastructure is in place to support them. I think the technology is still too new for prices to come down to mass-adoption level. Plus the anti-cycling mentality of some regions is unhelpful too.

Lime bikes (the green things littered on the streets) are battery powered. Much better in Sydney than the swathe of coloured bikes previously scattered around town as they are now effortless and assist greatly on the hills around Sydney (unlike Melb/Adl which are relatively flat).
