    Step 1. Start 10 independent hedge funds with uncorrelated portfolios.
    Step 2. Wait a couple of years, and close the underperformers.
    Step 3. Market the remaining funds based on their outstanding performance.
    Step 4. Try to maintain mid level results and market the funds on their 3->5->10 year performance.

    Hmmmmmmmm. Not advice.

    Hopefully for your investments they turn the ships in 2019 @pwnitat0r

    They need to outperform if only running on performance fees

    This reminds me of some advice for beating the index. Just buy every stock in proportion to their market weights consistent with an index fund philosophy. Then make a single, small adjustment. Just remove one stock that you know is an absolute dog, that you just know with underperform the general market. How hard can that be? If you pick right, your overall porftfolio will beat the index!

    Turns out to be a lot harder than what you think.
