    Hi guys,

I'm keen to sit down and talk to a financial advisor ASAP to map out my current situation and goals for long-term investing in shares. No idea where to start with this.

Can anyone recommend one in the Sydney CBD? Focus would be on long term shares, tax minimisation, SMSF strategies. Thanks!

Below is not a recommendation; I have never had any dealings with them.

I understand that Luke Rathborne from Fortitude Private Wealth is Peter Thornhill's Financial Advisor. They are based in York Street Sydney CBD.

They have the following testimonial from Peter Thornhill on their website:

Since meeting with Luke Rathborne and engaging his services as our financial planner, Rita and I have been extremely delighted with the experience. Personally, I have found Luke to be accessible when we need him, and proactive in approaching me with relevant and valuable ideas.

He makes me feel like I am an important client, and I am continually impressed that he genuinely takes an interest in me and my family’s affairs.

He has taken a comprehensive, long term approach to addressing our financial needs and creating and protecting our wealth. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a trusted adviser relationship.

    Peter Thornhill, Principal, Motivated Money.

As always, do your own research and due diligence.

Perhaps the testimonial was provided by way of video/audio and messed up in a transcription of sorts?

    Frieda (free-ta) vs. Rita (ree-ta)?

I am the same. Someone asked Peter about FPs and he said that he only uses those with fee for service arrangements.
Would this change your thoughts @austing ??
While it would be great to have someone in the industry to bounce ideas/thoughts off, their advice/commentary must be unbiased and have my interests at the front of their approach.

NO. Although If it was an occasional one off for highly specialised advice I would do it. But for basic investing I wouldn't.

Peter has a large portfolio of shares, a SMSF here and in the U.K., his wife has shares in the U.K.. Peter's getting older and given his wife is not an investor from what I understand he wants the FP to be able to attend to things when he is no longer around. I think they're also leaving the ongoing income from half the estate to charities which his FP will manage. So as you can see this is not a fairly straight forward situation.

That's why I chose to keep my investments as simple as I can. So when I kick the bucket it should be manageable by my wife who has very little interest in investing.

That is really clear, thanks @austing. 'Investing ins't meant to be hard'.

If I can side track this conversation for a moment, there are comments about investing in specific shares/companies. While there appears to be a fairly established approach about DD into LICs, if I was to diversity into specific companies/shares, choosing which company to go into, and when might be a conversation with a FP?? (including when to get out if required)

Was his FP there with him during the course yesterday?I understand Luke was with him during a previous course and any questions about specific investments were directed to his FP on the day.

Maybe read some more and don't rush into anything.

Didn't Peter say he was reducing his holdings and going to invest proceeds into his core LICs;)?

    mmm, yes.

Simplicity is the key, I agree. Just need to bring it together with DBS super towards retirement.
