Each lens has it's own sweet spots.
There is a chart you can download for each lens, cross referencing f stops with focal lengths and distance from subject.
Forget where it is but will try find it. shortly

Hoya ND 400 its 9 stops but thats plenty. in fact you wont be able to compose by simply looking thru the viewfinder its so dark. Have to set the screen for viewing.

Thanks will inquire. Yeah i watched some videos where they preset the composure and focus point before the filter was placed on cos it was pitch black through the viewfinder. Appreciate all your pointers.

Easier to watch the effects of the filter live on screen while you compose etc. Only thing with that though is it drains the battery quicker.

I shoot plenty of my kids sports (Rugby), a few seniors games, a few Shute Shield games and the odd super rugby match or Wallabies match from the stands. I also shoot cycling crit races.

Currently shooting with a 5dmkiii and 100-400L ii lens, cant really fault it as it's all top level gear but I have permission to upgrade, just cant decide what to...upgrade the body to 5dmk4, 1dxm2 or follow the heard and go Sony A7iii or A9...Or get myself a nice shiny 300mm f2.8 ;)

That could have been applied in the beach shot where @Scott No Mates mentioned that the detail had been lost in the sky. I'm not sure if it's better to try to get detail from underexposure (as @Kinnon has done) than from overexposure. If you bracket your shots where there's a big contrast in lighting you will be able to pick which one to work with. Bracketing means doing the same shot with a range of different exposures.
