Never saw this one coming..... Chancellor just proposed a burqa ban, here is the link (Ref. Vox, 6 December) and an extract.

"It should be banned, wherever it is legally possible," she added.

The rule would prohibit Muslim women from donning full-face coverings in schools, court rooms, and administrative buildings, according to the Washington Post. It would also make it an offense to wear one while driving or participating in a demonstration.

Merkel suggested that the measure was meant to protect German culture, saying that Germans “show our face in interpersonal communication.”

Why Germany's famously tolerant chancellor just proposed a burqa ban

Your link to the Washington POST article is broken, the Vox one is OK.

It's difficult. I can see the reasons on both sides.

I thought the French ban on the burquini was ridiculous. If a women wants to cover her body at the beach, that should be her choice. her face is left uncovered.

Full face covering is less than desirable imo. It's not so much a part of the religion as of custom. As is the much more barbaric custom of FGM which is still practiced in the Western World. Covering the face can certainly lead to abuses.

I would tend to lean towards banning full face covering in public while allowing other traditional dress to be worn.

I have a number of Muslim friends here in Australia and overseas. I don't know whether they would agree with me on this or not. But I am all for banning the burqa. I agree with Merkel's position on this. Walking around in what is akin to wearing a ski mask is antisocial and threatening. Why not just a headscarf? Its 2016. Plus I see it as subjugating and controlling of women. Anyway this isn't something I would campaign on or really think too much about as I also support generally people's choice to wear what they want punk rockers emos, hippies, everyone. Its good to be open minded. But I think a full face covering is too much.

I agree with you, I don't like the full face covering.

It is a security risk and it's all good and all to say we are being discriminative but isn't is fair to people in society to have view about it and we are not saying that we don't respect their religion and belief, or else we would ask for the ban of the hijab. Any guys that ask their wives to wear the burqa in my view are needy, lacking self confidence and not a man at all.

Should be banned any location another individual would be unable to cover their face e.g. doubt someone could wear a ski-mask in a court room. But in public they should be able to wear what they want.

I vote NO for any public place that anyone else is not allowed to wear them - as said.
    I have a question too; question is two parts;
    1. if the women are able to not wear them if they choose? (in Australia)
    2. do they actually like to wear them?

Sorry but this just freaks me out, especially in public places.

I went into Maccas last week. The lady who served me had a burqa- but it wasn't very attractive, and it was a little dirty.

The following day I went to Hungry Jacks. Another lady had a burqa but it was attractive and well cleaned.

    Which just goes to show.

The burqas are better at Hungry Jacks.

Massive double standard here (maybe a 1st world problem) - I went to the local Regional shopping centre. The lady working at the Santa photo booth was done up (face not covered though).

Latest update on NSW Courts - it may well be contempt of court....linky This has been going for a few weeks now.

These are private property, so rules should be up to the proprietor, but if they ban helmets inside it would make sense to ban any full head cover.

Btw I was being technically incorrect for the purposes of the story. Ladies working in a public service area would normally wear a hijab or head scarf (rather than a burqa), showing their face. A niqab is a scarf normally covering the nose and mouth. A burqa is a full face covering.

There are news stories about a Muslim lady who was pulled up by police. She was actually wearing a niqab rather than a burqa. But for the purposes of this discussion, many people object to any face covering- burqa or niqab. These are both quite rare in Australia.

Not so common on the Canberra line.

I'd imagine I'd see a few more getting towards Lakemba .

I would like to see the burqa/niqab banned, but strangely enough I don't mind the burkini.
