I am in China and want to buy Aussie shares. Since I am not an Australian resident at the moment, it seems I am unable to. How do I go about it? or is it impossible.
    Thanks for any advice.

Definitely possible. You just need to open an account with an online brokerage such as Internaxx, Saxo Bank, IB, etc. Once open you will be able to purchase shares on the ASX. I would definitely recommend reading Andrew Hallam's 'Millionaire Expat: How to Build Wealth Living Overseas'. He explains the whole process. Good luck!
