I'd love to, but not yet.

Periodically I do the sums on a Ferrari just to get it out of my system. Never follow through for obvious reasons

I liked what I read about the small fords with econoboost, the 1.6 fiesta I think and the next one up...the 2l, overall package seemed quite good.

But apart from the money cost, there is the lic to look at.

I wonder how some of you have a lic if you have sub 4 sec 100/k cars.

When you work it out by the hour, it's not that impressive.

I keep telling the dear doctor that driving a Ferrari around in central Brisbane is a waste of a good motor car. Drive the Holden to work and save the Ferrari for the weekends, I say.

Need extreme will power not to mash the loud pedal. I went on a 3 months licence holidays and still on a 12 months good behaviour period. Or else I lose it for another 6. Besides, it gets out of your system after a while, can't exactly use race start everywhere....

My car (for another 3 weeks lol) is nowhere near sub 4sec, it's 6.2 and even that I find tempting all too often, I can only imagine what a sub 4sec vehicle would be like in terms of temptation :p

New car is a second slower than my current car on 0-100 :)

And with a 3" cannon exhaust you can make any car sound fast too!

Timely thread, just sold my Lotus Evora S (my profile pic) yesterday and expecting delivery of the shiny new beast around July.

My personal rule of thumb for cars is 10% of networth growth. So I add up our salaries, rental income, 10yr-averaged property growth, share/fund growth etc, subtract interest, costs & expenses, and then only choose a car whose combined running costs + depreciation are under 10% of that figure.

This way I can enjoy my toys whilst still being financially responsible, and importantly, never worry about missing out on these great experiences on the gamble that I can afford to buy myself the freedom to enjoy them when I'm older.

Ahh, the good ol' 3" cannon exhaust. I remember those. Popular in my hooligan days..they were everywhere. People were putting them on everything. Even Hyundai Excels.

For sure, and the new car feels soooooooo much faster, sort of like a go-kart :)

Alas I bought an auto and sports exhausts just don't sound awesome on an Auto :)

In my day it was Gemini's with a hotdog muffler :p. And I may or may not have had one on my Mini ;)

We must have been around at the same time Dan. I remember those Gemini's too with the hotdogs. Remember the chrome mag phase?

Nothing sounds as awesome as the drone of a 1.6L carby engined auto lancer with a 3" cannon.

    They are known as WRXcels

Hahaha yeah the 5 spoke tubular mags were big back then :). I'm 40 (41 this year) so if you are anywhere within 5 years of that then yeah, we will have a lot of similar car memories :)

My mate had a nissan gazelle, Auto with a massive exhaust, it was horrible, it was a really cheap sports exhaust so it didn't burble or cough, it litteraly just had a monotone drone. Sounds exactly like your experience with a lancer :)

At one stage some Excel's rolled around with a WRX bonnet scoop glued on and doesn't actually do anything.....and then there's a shop called Sick Division making all kinda of vomit inducing body kits for them. I suppose it's called "Sick" for a reason.

My thinking on this has changed over time as I've grown up.
Teenage years: omg that car looks so cool!
20s: that's rice, it doesn't do anything, it's so lame
30s: the owner is probably very happy to have customised his car. Who am I to tell him what he likes?
