I reckon it comes down to price points too - If one was spending $100K on a car the non-euro's can't really compete imo.
If I only had $35K to spend on a car, well maybe a different story (I'm still euro biased, well maintained few years old euro car > brand new japanese/korean car)

im of the firm personal belief is that in life you get what you pay for
if im paying say for example $40k for a camry vs $80k for a entry level BMW, since im paying double, id expect it at the very least to last longer or be a hell of a lot better in a different area, which I dont think is the case

one thing for sure is camrys until very recently have been boring as bat*&^*
but the last couple of years they are looking fantastic,
the current shape civic sedan looks gorgeous for $25k

We are driving a Volvo XR40 and our main reason for choosing this over the Mitsubishi Outlander we had is purely for the smaller size, safety and comfort. But it is having its service as I type, and needs two new tyres ($450 each) plus brakes were metal on metal and will cost us $833. Our mechanic who used to service our previous cars said he could probably shave $200 off the brake price (and our warranty would not be jeopardised) but he can't get us in for nearly two weeks as he's so busy.

Hubby said to me "gee that's expensive" because cars have never been our thing, but I said we can afford it, and whilst the Outlander was a safe vehicle, I don't think you can get much safer than Volvo. It will even step in, brake and steer us out of danger if we don't react in time.

The other thing I love (and only Audi has a similar system I believe in our price range anyway) is the amazing camera set up so I can reverse park by looking at the screen (or can have it park for me, but haven't tried that). The "looking down on my car from above" option makes parking and reversing so easy.

We still wanted an SUV for the higher ride and we still do use the boot, but we aren't renovating these days, and don't need the larger car.

One of the hidden bonuses of hybrids like my RAV4 is that if you drive sensibly regen braking does most of the slowing down and disk pads and rotors last almost indefinitely.

If your ego can live with it, just buy a 2nd hand, low km 5-8 yr yr old Japanese SUV like a RAV4, CRV, CX-5 etc.

Personally I'd ditch the Q5....especially THIS one you're looking at. $16K purchase price with potentially $5K worth of problems.

Bit more exy but just for you info, I drove a (hired) hybrid RAV4 from Sydney to Byron on one tank. Amazing!

I think its actually the opposite ie European cars look like their cheaper brethren and vice versa. BMW's, Jags, Mercs etc used to be distinctive (say 20 plus years ago) but these days, if it wasn't for the badge, I can hardly tell. Tesla's stand out with their minimalist design though.

@Lacrim is partly correct, because the original LJ10 took parts from the Mitsubishi J3 made under license from Jeep c.1970.

I love how the current model takes so many cues from the LJ80

ive seen photos of the suzuki"jeep" copy and I think it will age poorly and quickly, looks a bit on the tacky side for a brand new 2020 car,

I agree they do look very classy.. I don’t think they could have made the badge on the front look any bigger though. (The three pointed swastika).
They’re really preying on the image conscious millennials by reducing the price point and milking their logo.. apart from safety, they way underperform vs Korean cars..
