There are plenty of bookshops around still. Many people want to hold a book and not a kindle.

They're a dying industry though just like the newspaper. Everything is electronic now. Newsagents are also another business to stay clear of especially now that the lottery is done online.

I like physical books but I find that buying from bookdepository.com is far cheaper and better range than most physical bookstores. Physical bookstores are just too small to stock the range and breadth of topics I like to look at.

    Now here is something unusual.
The business of porn magazine is dead.
Playboy is to stop printing nude photos ('Playboy' to stop publishing nude photos

What do you reckon are the odds of Playboy continuing after Hugh Hefner's death?...

I see the smart operators are doing well (without looking at their financials). It seems there success is giving the customer an experience, join a book club, author nights, recommend a genre of books for the customer, cafe with lounges to enjoy the books - a customised experience that cannot be replicated online.

Even the porn industry in general has gone bad as far as I know.
They had it good in the VHS video era.
Too much piracy/file sharing these days and the poor actors/actresses are not getting paid what they used to.
Also, too many amateur freelancers a la Uber style doing webcam shows and stuff.....

The Adult sex bookshops used to be a big money spinner once but even they're dying out ..Yes even though i still see the Adult /sex shops in the City selling porn magazines , toys etc , DVDs, dolls, leather gear, etc
I do wonder how they make money now that you can buy porn movies and all that stuff online.

Surely no guys buy the porn magazines anymore ? Hustler etc

Why do these shops have small dark cubicles with a video running? I tried to peep in one and the fella inside started telling me off lol.

Yeah i guess so...still id never write off the porn industry - like real estate, the porn industry has an underlying demand...well..tge demand may not be as nonvolatile as RE but there is still there...

I don't agree really that it is just live sport keeping it alive. I think we "older" folk who don't know how to use Netflix and similar sites, don't download via the computer, and don't really care to learn - are keeping Foxtel alive.

Every month I pay Foxtel I think "I need to learn how to get something else - cheaper"... maybe that will be something I do in 2016.

    Oil companies.

Although our demand for energy is increasing, at some point in time technology will catch up and alternative methods of obtaining the energy will be found.

Oil is only used today because it is cheap. When oil prices hit $100/barrel, and maintain this level - alternatives become more affordable. Relatively speaking.

I dont believe in 'peak oil'. We will never run out of oil. Markets will simply adjust and alternatives will become more affordable.

I dont know when it will happen. Probably not in my lifetime. Maybe not in my childrens life time.

C'mon @datto, fess up. You knew you weren't in the kebab shop when your thongs got stuck to the carpet.

You can eat off the floor in that kebab shop on Cleveland St.

I thought I was on the corner of Cleveland and Bourke.

Feeling a little peckish I just walked into what looked a meat market. I didn't notice the sticky floor as I was too concerned about the sticky walls lol.
