My body seems to get sick on junk food living ; hungry jacks etc kebabs, KFC Pizza etc:confused:

I love beef kebabs but they were making me sick and sluggish with my doctor called toxins
I was eating them a lot only to get constipation, tiredness etc

So tonight my student flatmate suggested healthier,a mexican place ., Tex Mex ? Or mex tex or whatever .....i never heard of it but apparently its some franchise mexican food,.?

Anyway i looked online menu to be a bit disappointed these “burritos “ looked like kebabs?

But....i went ahead anyway and ordered a beef burritoo_O

My flatmate brought it back i was disapointed $13 for what looked like a kebab ?

I asked him why he didnt haggle the price down, $13 for this!!!
$13 for this i shouted waving my hands in the air ! Bloody robbers

Anyway i started to eat it and immediately i started to love it, no fat oils were running out like the kebabs i usually eat , it was full of mince type beef but had black beans and other beans and salad , and it filled me right up unlike the other takeaways ,,

I would like to make these myself and wonder how they are made , are they healthy .?

    Healthy is relative I guess

The higher the fibre load and complex carbs the less hungry I feel.

Check out the KJ, fat, serving size etc - IIRC you'd like to believe that they're healthier than some of the alternatives (but it does depend on whether you ladle on the sour cream, cheese and other toppings).

Cheap and easy to make. Can be high in fibre (beans and veg), high in veg, good amount of protein, reasonable fat and carbs.

You will pay more to get someone else to make them for you:
    Beef and bean burritos

Whether it's authentic or not depends on the chain. Guzmán y Gómez does the real deal. I believe Mad Mex is authentic. Zambrero is more Tex Mex, though the food is good.

Whether they are healthy or not is another question. Mexicans are some of the most overweight people in the world. But it depends on what you put in. I use cheap mince meat, but leave it to sit overnight after I've cooked it, and remove the fat when it's solidified. Sour cream is used traditionally, but plain Greek yoghurt is a healthier substitute. The cans of refried beans in the Mexican section of the supermarket are good. And then it's salads.

They are traditionally made with corn flour but could be made with large corn tortillas if you were worried about carbs, I guess.

They did originate in Mexico, but aren't a traditional food. Flour tortillas are used in the north of Mexico. The word burrito means little donkey. The folk legend goes that during the Mexican revolution (1910s) a guy started taking tacos out to sell, but made them into a wrap for convenience.

You only really need cheese, a can of refried beans, tomato and lettuce and burritos of course. You may want to add sauce.

    At coles
    A butter lettuce is $2
half a kilo of tomatoes is $2.50
    250g cheddar cheese is $4
a can of refried beans is $3.30
    6 burrito tortillas is $2.40
500ml of sweet chilli sauce is $1.79

So, for $15.99 you should be able to make 6 good burritos. $2.65 each.

I was just watching this on youtube the other night.. salivating the whole time. I can see why Mexicans may be a little overweight.. simmering the pork in lard although delicious seems like a recipe for a heart attack.

    Thanks for the YouTube.

If you want high saturated fat, try tamales, which are traditionally eaten for breakfast. They're made from lard, corn meal, and a small amount of something else - which could be meat or sweet. Not healthy, but good.

Or chicharon. In many parts of Latin America, this is deep fried pork (with lots of pork fat); in Mexico, it's pork fat, treated and rendered so that it's crunchy. Like port crackling with only the crunch, no hard bits. With lemon juice and chillie powder, it's great.

Grow your lettuce/ greens and tomatoes (although my green thumbs are a bit hit and miss) and it's even cheaper.

I believe this is due to the increased popularity of cheap processed food/drinks like soft drinks etc rather than their traditional diet. Similar trends are in many of the Pacific islands as well.

An interesting photo essay in Time magazine: Hungry Planet: What The World Eats

Aren't they just?! What do they do with the tomatoes at the supermarket to make them so disappointing? One of those mysteries of life, I guess

Pick them green or partially ripe so they transport better. Vine ripened tomatoes are so tasty they taste like a different fruit.
