An installer wouldn't want the hassle to reuse the same copper pipes , when the old one is removed they will probably be damaged.

The copper also has to be bent by hand and flanged onto the tap on the outdoor unit which takes a lot of bending and tweaking to get right and I highly doubt it will fit the new unit. Also the copper used going from the indoor to outdoor unit does not cost much at all. So it's just not worth the risk of it leaking for the new unit. You are paying mostly for the unit and the installers time the materials are about $150

I would recommend new one with warranty.

9 years is a good run out of a split

Obviosuly out of warranty and if there is no service in Australia good luck getting parts.

    What brand is it?

I have a Sanyo split system that started playing up a bit about one month ago. After turning off the power and isolating it at the switch board, I checked all the connections to the PC boards (un-plug and and plug in again). Now it is working fine again. Used summer and winter for the last 29 years!! Now that is a good run :)

Do you even need it ?

if for existing IP and tenants want it, would replace if it is in fact faulty.
