Hawke reintroduced Medicare. Gough first brought it in during his term. Gough also withdrew from the Vietnam war, brought in the 17.5% leave loading for workers and introduced Free University.

I captured it. As soon as I heard the news I was on Wiki. It didn't take long for the comments to disappear.

Many years ago, I knew a guy who was very high up in a major company. This was when Hawke was still ACTU president. The guy I knew was very right wing, though he really respected Hawkey, and the compromises he was able to reach between the unions and management.

This was a time when strikes were really common.

This guy died before Hawke became PM.

Getting a bit desperate when they have to bump off one of their own to get the sympathy vote?

Remember, this is politics. From the dawn of mankind, human sacrifices have been made to further others.

I think one of his greatest achievements was work in increasing the high school retention rate. When he entered office the high school completion rate for students was 30%, and by his departure this had risen to 70%.

Very reflective of several structural changes in the economy - high youth unemployment, restructuring (loss) of our secondary industry base which sucked up many apprentices, opening up of more places at Uni (thus becoming an essential prior to gaining employment & delaying youth hitting the statistics), introduction of HECS.

The 17.5% I remember was the interest I was paying on my mortgage :( maybe that was to offset the leave loading?)

I liked Bob Hawke as a PM but was too young to know what was really going on. In hindsight, Hawke / Keating partnership was the best in my lifetime so far and it doesn't seem to be improving.

Is 60 years of drinking beer > 80 years of teatotalling?
