Guys, what about a jetski? Are these expensive to run and maintain? I would imagine a lot cheaper than a boat - but is this a correct assumption?
LOL! One of my dreams was to buy a decent boat (we live near the beach) and have it berthed over at Mt.Martha marina nearby....none of this queuing up with all the bogans and their crappy tinnies at the boat ramp. But, the business has gone cr@p and that dream has died....until now (sold the PPoR and now have no debt and can finally accumulate some lifestyle dollars). Can't afford the big boat, but looking to buy a jetski over winter (when everyone realises they are a waste of money and not used enough/cost etc)...but one big enough to carry a passenger, and also powerful enough to tow the kids behind on a donut, or even a bit of a ski. Sort of a compromise, and lots of fun.
Our neighbour has a Jet-ski up for sale as he said the novelty wore off pretty quickly. Over the summer they used it quite regularly, but it has now been laying idle for months as the water temperature is too cold to enjoy. Food for thought.
For the money you pay for a jet ski you could get into a fairly reasonable boat/tinny. Which will be far more versitile. A jetski (like dirt bike) depends largely on usage. Its a 2:1 ratio (for every 2hrs usage, you have 1hr of repairs/servicing) (thats an old joke). Once you get over "going really really fast" there is not much to them. For a boat of similar purchase cost they will cost more to run, service and maintain. Blacky
Yeah, I would go for a decent tinnie. But you may as well go for a bowrider, bit more room. But then you may as well upgrade to the closed bow, maybe with sleeping area. Then may as well upgrade to full onboard engine. And before you know it, you'll be buying the one you can land a helicopter on!
Yeah, but once you have the one with the chopper you need the tinny to get onto the beach, and you need the bowrider to enjoy the sun and a to go up the remote creek, and the closed bow for a days fishing and the one with some accomodation for a quick island visit, and then the bigger one for those times when you wont be using the chopper.... 1 boat is never enough. I have 5 at the moment - and I dont even live in the country
I'm not reading through the whole thread, but just heard this in the hallway. What does Boat stand for? 'Bout another thousand
Yeah, no joking. We are trying to sell 2 of them. I jumped the gun a bit when I saw the boat I wanted come on the market for 10-15% under market val. So bought it before I had sold the other one. And then I bought another tinny which was better than our old tinny just cos I saw it and it was cheap. So now need to get rid of the old one. The last one is an Avon decent boat which should go in the trash. I just need to pull the bits I want off it first. The biggest issue with so many boats is storage space. Need to upgrade the shed to fit them all in. Blacky
5? You mean you can have less?!? I'm at 5 right now too. Putting the 49er on gumtree soon though, which will mean *sob* only 4...
Yep. I'm well aware of the 5 min glamour of such items - hence will be looking to buy a straw hat in the winter. But I won't buy a tinnie on principal - either a big-assed mother which can host a small party, and needs to be berthed, or forget it. Tinnies are for blokes who fish. Eff that....hate fishing. I want a boat to entertain on, and/or just swan around on and sip beer/whine and sunbath and look at girls wearing bikinis...maybe even dive over the side for a dip/snorkel. I can tether the jetski to it as well. It's gotta have **** factor too, you know.
