At nearly $5M would you not be better to hire it for a week when you need it?

I know that you know that, and that isn't the aim of the question. I think to be able to afford to spend $5M on something you may use occasionally (heck, even if you use it every weekend) you would need to work a lot harder or smarter and miss out on family time. Some folk can do it differently, but that is my thought.

Just hire one when you want to...

    What? No!

Tim, all you need to do is figure what is required from you to achieve an income large enough to finance such a purchase.

Then take action on it. It's not that complicated.

Based on reading about what you've been able to achieve so far, there are people that have done a lot more with a lot less. You can do it, buddy!

The two happiest days of a boat owners life:
    The day he buys it.
    The day he sells it.

Yeah. So to be able to justify a 5 million dollar boat I reckon youd have to have 40 million in your bank account.

Any less and youd get too caught up in the running costs I reckon.

I have absolutely no doubts that you would be able to DIY it looking at what you've done.

We've had a couple of boats - sold the last one 3 years ago.

We literally lived right next to the water, yet only took the yacht out around 10 times a year ... so moving an hour inland meant it really was never going to get used.

Theory now is that if we really really really want to go sailing, we'll hire one in the locations we want to sail ... already done the Whitsundays.

It's Ok, but it's a bit small. I'd need one you can land a helicopter on.
Do I have a helicopter? No. But I'd like to know I could if I wanted to.

It has a dedicated scuba diving deck with two nitrox membrane compressors. That's all I need. :D
